Thanks to Rod Renshaw for the description (pp26-8) of his implementation of Jim Whetren's idea for an easy-to-use clamp.

Thinking about my own small Astra drill and re-reading Jim Whetren's description led me to a slightly simplified version:

The vice is free to slide fore and aft and is instantly clamped by the knob under the table:

In my version the clamping pressure is applied by the large washer and I have adopted Rod's suggestion of knurled top hat nuts.

          Nicely done EGA.

An eagle-eyed reader spotted fig. 2 of the article was a repeat of fig.1.

It's pretty easy to figure out what it should be, but the missing figure will be in the next issue anyway.

            Neil:

Whilst not claiming eagle eyes I did,of course, notice the slip; it made no difference in my case since I had decided to go with a large washer rather than the pressure bar used by Rod. I also dispensed with his brass washer, using moly grease instead.

Incidentally, the hand knob was salvaged from an old office chair.
