I've just turned off the lathe, 39 Celcius in the workshop here in Melbourne, too hot to work. It's too hot for me and too cold for you in the U.K. What a pity we can't meet halfway weatherwise.

This was a week ago in an uninsulated shop with about 20 ton of machinery in it.

Further south east from Melbourne, in a little place called Cranbourne, which is part way to Phillip Island, it's a degree or so cooler. Perhaps about 36C. It's forecast to remain hot for at least another week. Indications for overnight temperatures are that it will not drop below 18C, making sleep rather uncomfortable.

A friend living on the outskirst of NY sent a couple of pictures showing their second heavy snowfall in two weeks.

Quite pretty!

As an ow'd Lancashire lad, it brings back many memories, especially the 1940 snowfall in Bolton and surrounds.

Hi Stephen,

I agree 39 C is too hot to work, Where I live we had earlier this winter 75cm of snowfall in less than 2 days. So half of your temperature brought up north would have been nice.

Don't pay any attention to John Stevenson – that's a Chinese thermometer and its really reading farenheit, not centigrade.

My workshop here, at the foot of the Pyrenees, is at 19 C with no heating. Nah na nah!

Cloudless blue day here without a breath of wind. Makes 4.5 C feel warm…

Just checked the met office website and the warmest spots in teh UK are at 8C so far today.

For Steve in Oz''s benefit the Met office temperature scale goes from -30C up to +36 C. Engalnd records are -26.5 coldest and hottest is 38.5 C

Here in NE scotland the weather is beautiful, so warm I'm only wearing one sweater. Just got back from the pub and feel very guilty for not doing something more useful.

I had to scrape the ice off my car windsreen when I clocked off my volunteer shift on the railway last night. But the clear skies and still air had made the sights and sounds of the dining train climbing the bank under starlight behind a SR Schools pretty magical. Models are good, but you need to see the real thing too .

(The real ale train was running too. That wasn't quite so pretty; but loud and happy none the less).

A few weeks ago here in Sydney it topped 46.5 C at the local weather station and i guess it would have been over 50C in the workshop .

Apparently the hottest day ever recorded for the Sydney region and the aircon was struggling to keep the living room at a comfotable temperature .

There was no way i was going anywhere near the workshop and even hanging some washing out on the line was a chore but it did dry quickly !

I usually plonk myself down on the lounge,cold beer in hand and draw some sketches of what i am making or going to make next , after all it may be too hot / cold to do physical work but a perfect oppertunity to let the mind run wild .

You would be amazed at what comes out of it especailly when correctly lubricated !

Hope you lot down in Victoria are well away from the bushfires ?

Doesn't look too good for those living in/near the Grampians.

South east of Melbourne, we're well clear of those fires.
