Not much in there that cant be found online. It was nice to see complete articles from start to finish though.

Many articles seem to be drawn out of late that could have been completed in one issue. Throw a few more pages in and complete articles in an issue please

I'm going to buck the trend and say that I think its a very good colection of articles, I quite like the motoring piece firstly because I own a classic car and secondly because as a Newsletter writer of a club I belong to I find that putting an outsider into the pages of the general club subjects lightens it up and gives the reader something else to think about.

The various engineering subjects are interesting as well particularly as I've never seen them, the ball turning piece iis of particular interest to me, as the saying goes you can please some of the people some of the time and not most of the time

Isnt that part of the challenge, to make it I will have to adapt it to suit my lathe so a lot of the detail will be off no use to me but the basic premise is good enough for me to copy.

Surely the car item is in the wrong magazine. There are any number of publications on the newsagents shelves covering such subjects. I only see 6 precious pages of my model engineering magazine lost to something which is better covered elsewhere.

Didn't realise it was the 200 th edition untill I saw this thread. Pity, if a bit more of a splash had been made it could have gained publicity.

I was most surprised by the fact that Harold Hall did not even bother to tip his hat in the direction of old GHT. Many of the ideas of the small rotary table would look to be a direct lift from George's design, and may I say that I find GHT more easy to follow in his instructions.

I am sorry Alan that you find it surprising I did not give GTH a mention but I am not well read, do not have the time, and did not know of his table.

I cannot say that my offering is totally from my own head but prompted by a photograph I had seen during my time as editor, I now find is was acctually in issue 1 of MEW. And the person who made that was a Tony Daish and I did not give him a mention either.

It is probable that GHT had also been influenced by others offerings.

I have now found the GHT table in the Hemmingway catalogue and can see some long distance similarities. Though I do not see fine adjustments of the stops, 24 hole indexing and, for me, the inbuilt facility to be able to centre workpieces very easy.

It is quite probable that over the years I have produced items that had a noticeable similarity with items designed by others, its inevitable. I can assure you that this is quite coincidental. For me, designing an item is much more satisfying than the making. If I just largely copied others designs most of the satisfaction would be lost.

I have Radford's Improvements and accessiories for your lathe. It appears he had access to resources beyond most of us – making large castings and majking and hardening his own tools in high-speed steel.

I find his writing dry and unengaging compared to Duplex, George Thomas or Edgar Westbury – other writers on tooling. Also, his tools were often rather over complex and over finished, to my mind. He made elevating heads for his Myford along the lines of a Bormilathe. Very complex, demanding of great accuracy and with no obvious advantages over raising blocks, yet these days the combination of work involved and cost would far outweigh the alternative of buying an imported machine with greater cpacity and the motor and rigidity to make use of it.

His ball cutting tool is more complex than the one featured in MEW200, yet I doubt that it was particularly superior.

Maybe those who have seen a greater selection of his writings and work will disagree with me.

Someone posted the Radford's headstock dividing head and graduating tool look good, but if I remember correctly, both were modified and written up by GHT. I have made both to Georges words and music (more or less) and have had good results from them. I know that I'm regarded as a total fan of GHT (York . M.E. will concur), but he did so much to foster good and useful tooling for the Myford and similar sized machines. I have been told that at the SMEE he could be a pedantic old B….. . Anyway, I had my rant, been put in my place (nicely, I hasten to add) by Harold and will still keep taking the MEW for a bit longer, as I've done since issue 1.
