      Hello all,

I'm at last organising my workshop and wonder if anyone has ideas on the best way to arrange my drill bit boxes around the pillar drill for easy access.

At the moment thay are just stacked on top of each other resulting in the usual search to find what I need.

      i haven't labeled any – yet.

Some time ago I saw an advert for an auxiliary table that clamped around the column, but don't remember where I saw it.

      Suggestios please.

      Cheers

Geoff – Norfolk, UK not VA

I bought one of those auxiliary drill press tables. I got it where I bought the drill press, Machine Mart.

            Regards

            Geoff

              I use shelf technology

Sorry Geoff, Just noticed that was a first post. My reply is meant to be humourous, not terse! But seriously, that's how I store my drill bits – a shelf above and to the left of the drill press.

              And welcome aboard!

                Thanks for the responses.

                Mike:

All my drills are already in metal containers or DIY holders. I'm just looking for a way to unclutter the heap of boxes, to save the few seconds to hunt for, and extricate, the drill I'm after

                Geoff:

                MachineMart no longer list it.

I've tried Axminster & Screwfix but nothing.

                Will make something.

                Neil:

I'm using shelf tech right now as well, so your response wasn't terse in the least.

                Thanks for the welcome.

                My thoughts:

As I've been out of the hobby since 1986, my thought processes are having to re-engage with regards to mechanical solutions.

I've been thinking about a trolley to contain tools and parts in current use, with the drills housed permanently. A drawing display frame to be included.

One of my problems is that I always seem to look for the most complicated solution at first.

i need to let this thought run its course as I organise my 70+ drawers.

                regards

                Geoff

A set of Bisley type form drawers with hardboard liner and subdividers?… I use form drawers for a lot of my smaller tools, though my headline imperial set (numbers to 60, 64ths to 1/2 and a set of letters) lives on top of one of them…. Alternately if you've got Dexion shelving they made drawer kits for most of their common depths…. I've got a 3 foot high unit that has 54 off 18" long, 6" wide by 4" high drawers (with subdividers in) in a 3 foot by 3 foot frontage… couldn't really be without it once I finish moving stuff, it's just swallowing bits and pieces…. label the front and away you go, and easy to resort the drawers as they just pull out….

Ebay might be your good friend….

                    Geoff,

Surely labelling the boxes would be a good start! I have half a dozen boxes in various parts of the workshop (so I do't have to move around too much) and if I didn't label them it would get very trying. I don't think it needs over-engineering, I just write on the front with a permanent marker.

I use shelves left and right behind the drill. The metal boxes are clearly labelled with a felt-tip pen. The sets that have been ground for brass use have the box fronts painted yellow and the drills themselves have been rough ground or emeried off at an angle on the blank end, so that I can quickly identify them.

I would be interested in any simple way of holding the box open so that it can't guillotine my fingers at the slightest opportunity. Perhaps a pad glued underneath at the front so the box is leaning back slightly?

For my metric drills I use a lump of hard wood (NOT oak) and use the drills to drills a hole in it. I then write the drill size next to the hole. I have pukka stands for my fractional, number and letter drills. Dad bought them at the closing down of ole Noah's ship yard.
