Having received my copy of MEW for November, (yes, it’s a bit late, but here in OZ we have to wait for these things to arrive), I was reading the first part of the series on “Soldering and Brazing, etc”, and it occurred to me that in all the articles that I have read, in whatever magazine, I have yet to see mention of the use of Stearine as a soldering flux.
Personally, I have used it for the last 50 years, on various metals, including, during my employment in the communications trade, as the only recommended (and supplied), flux for the lead-sheathed cables, which were in use when I commenced working in that industry, which confirmed my previous belief in the effectiveness of the product, having used stearine (in the form of the old white candles,) on both copper and brass and stainless steel, with great success and also on galvanised iron, with quite satisfactory results, with the added advantage of non-toxicity, and lack of corrosion on the completed job.
I await the storm of indignation which could be forthcoming ………
