Has anyone else noticed that the online Model Engineer Index at itech.net.au seems to have disappeared?

I used it about a week ago but now the link just comes up as 404-file not found. It looks as though the website is not there anymore.

I tried it for the first time in months on Sunday and got the same thing, I thought it was just me having forgotten where to find it – at least I'm not alone!

A great pity if it has gone.

Thanks Bazyle, I did have an index on my PC when I was running XP using a free and very early version on FMPRO which worked very well. Unfortunately, I had to upgrade to WIN10 when the old PC packed up and the early version of FMPRO will not run on the new one. I presume that the software is only 8 bit.

I'm going to have to either get to grips with running a virtual XP machine on the WIN10 PC or suss out using another database program that doesn't cost the earth sad

One of my two desktops is running dual boot XP SP3 and W10 on an SSD and works OK.
I did have a bit of an epic when I had to change the motherboard, without reinstalling either system, but all fine now.

I don't know if an index was ever published for those early mags so you may never find one

It may be worthwhile contacting SMEE (London) as I recall during a presentation on Crebbin + his loco in which the archivist stated that Roger Backhouse had used an early index put together by her father + not published

Indexes for the magazines used to be available printed on paper for a nominal sum plus SAE from the publishers – references in the online ME index to indexes appear to be exclusively to announcements of their availability, not an index as an article in the magazine. The online index at **LINK** suggests that indexes exist for many years from volume 4 onwards.

Bound volumes usually, but not always have the printed indexes included – that is what they were produced for so the easiest way is to find a bound volume and look for the index in there. Some ME clubs have complete sets of bound volumes.

My local library used to be able to get loan volumes from the Library for Science and Technology at Boston Spa in the UK, but I don't know if this even exists anymore. A local university might be another option.

                                  Hello Doreen,

Perhaps you can try to download **FROM HERE** and search the information you are looking for.
I'm not sure it is there, but you can try.

                                      Hi Doreen,

                                      Visit http://www.model-engineer.co.uk/mewindex

Not only are there links to online and offline indexes, but also a list to which issues the paper indexes appeared in.

The task of the paper indexes was started by Harold Hall and continued by Barry Chamberlain and does cover all issues.

These indexes are in included the Archive copies (at least those I've checked).

Actually it's not clear which, as this thread hasn't been very clear which is being spoken about when… but when folks refer to issues with low numbers it's usually MEW as the content of those early MEs while fascinating is very dated!
