When you receive your Issue 4496 I am afraid to say there has been a printer's error in pagination. The Show Guide, which is printed in full in the middle, has be reproduced in part on pages that should have been editorial. The article mainly affected is Stewart Hart's new vertical mill engine as featured on the cover. This article will be reprinted in full next time. Our apologies to Stewart and to all readers for the errors.

my copy of 4496 is misprinted on 770 and 771. I have extra copies of trade stands and missing helping dad.

Are all copies like this or just a few?

              Same problem with mine.

I know there are not many traders on the list this year, maybe it was a ploy to make it look like morewink 2

Diane did say there was a problem with the digital one but looks like that has carried through to the printed (digital has the right pages but not the guide as per Fridays thread  )

I've moved Diane's post to this thread.

We had a bit of a battle to get the pages in the right place for MEW223, seems that non-continuous page numbering caused confusion at the printers.

Do we get a discount on our subscription for missing pages, or will issue 4497 have extra pages to compensate ?

Until recently editorial pages and adverts were completely separate, so I could get rid of the adverts when I store the magazine away (I know, get a life). Recently there is a right mismash.

MEW could learn from this as well.

What do you think about using aluminium for the cylinder on this engine?

Quite a few of Stews Lads N Dads mill engien have been made which use the same basic cylinder & valve parts and they all seem to be running OK. 95% of makers are likely to be running on air and just short runs at that so teh ali is not an issue. Maybe for long runs on steam substituting brass would be worth thinking about.

                                    hi David

I used aluminium purely to keep the cost down for a beginner, I figured that as most of these engines would end up being run on air there would be no Problem, having said that not quite sure what the issues would be running steam with aluminium cylinders, can any one comment on this.

Some of the casting sets similar to Stuart engines but sold in the US (I think by Tiny) use aluminium castings.

I know they sometimes use ally cylinders with IC engines, I suppose the expected duty you are going to subject the engine to will have a bearing on it.

I think (to be fair) that there has only been an odd occasion in recent times when advertising has 'encroached' into editorials' space and that has been for particular house ads. Trade ads and classifieds are always outside of the editorial section.

I often wonder why collectors do this. When I look at old issues of engineering magazines/ publications the advertising is often as interesting as the editorial, from the point of view of historical study.
Doesn't apply these days of course wink

Only just got round to reading Iss. 4496 in the digital archive and there is a problem with the resolution: The advertising pages and the editorial are fine but from there up to page 782 the resolution is very poor. Itried cleaning my glasses but the text is still fuzzy wink.

Can anything be done to make the scanned issues a bit more consistent?

The viewer loads low-res pages which then 'click' into hi-res. Sometimes something beyond our control can stop this happening, such as a brief interruption to the connection. Clearing the cache can help..

                                                  You really want to know?

Because they changed the proofing system between the two issues. The new system presents the pages in a different way so when pages were corrected it wasn't obvious that they got inserted in the wrong place, while it would have been with the old system.

I will be discovering the joys of this new system over the next couple of days, so wish me luck.
