I see Wikipedia only lists 11 famous model engineers:

        **LINK**

Tom Walshaw/Tubal Cain makes it twice! I'm sure we all belong on the list cool but what other famous folk (most probably already on Wikipedia) should be on the list?

        • Alex Issigonis
        • Neville Shute Norway
        • Prof. Dennis Chaddock
        • George Thomas

Perhaps focusing on the dear departed to avoid embarrassment from inclusion or exclusion, are there any other votes?

P.S. I found an interesting snippet about Bassett-Lowke on Wikipedia:

"In January 2011 it was announced that W.J Bassett-Lowke would be commemorated with a steel sculpture placed alongside the River Nene near a cycle route which runs from Becket's Park towards Upton in Northampton. Bassett-Lowke was the winning choice following a public vote in Northamptonshire in which several potential 'local icons' were nominated. Charles Rennie Mackintosh and poet John Clare will also be commemorated as part of the same project, having received the second and third highest number of votes respectively."

i have a bit of a long memory re these things and would add messrs Marchant, Dr J. Bradbury Winter, C.M. Keiller, Jim Ewins, W.A. Carter and Roy Amesbury, all deceased. they all published info on what they built which has been invaluable to model engineers ever since. Cherry Hinds Hill MBE must rank of the very best still alive.

            cheers,

Not well known but certainly one of the most knowledgeable and gifted ever was Dr Alex Varga .

Otherwise I would include the Duplex pair and certainly Edgar Westbury .

I am still waiting for the day when a model engineer is a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing Or 'I'm a Celeb'. Only then can you say you have made it smiley

I do not see L C Mason listed, some of his work on IC engines should not go un-noticed especially his article "Gazing into the Flame",

..and of course his traction engine, Minnie.

                    Russell.

Well as a prolific author of model loco designs I guess Martin Evans must qualify and I also fully endorse the suggestion of Cherry Hill for her remarkable work – it leaves me open mouthed!

However what is the point of seeking " fame" in model engineering? It's an absorbing, fascinating and engaging pastime for me and, although I will never produce work that will draw gasps of envy from others, it sure gives me a lot of satisfaction. I would also say that an entry in the pages of Wikipedia is not my idea of success – do you really believe everything that you read there?

I think we have had enough of 'famous' model engineers in this thread.

When I first viewed it I thought it was going to be about 'famous' people who are or were model engineers of some discipline and to some extent, that might make it more interesting.

Engineers and scientists from history, as well as actors and celebrities from today might be categories to explore.

                            HI Chris,

That was my hope, but the discussion drifted…

No mention of Lawrence Sparey either… someone needs to fill in some spaces on that Wiki page.
