MEW 207 has an advert for the above at £5.99. It includes a full set of drawings and build instructions for the Lynx NE15 engine.

The same issue lists booklet and drawings for the same engine on special offer, reduced from£79 to "ONLY £59"! Some bargainsmiley

I think this is yet another example that the bean counters (“charge as much as the market will bear”) have taken full overall control of the company!

Bean counters are necessary but they should provide a service to management not control it. This is one of the problems in UK industry – how many chief execs in large enginneering companies are engineers?

                .

This begs a question for David Clark …

Is the "full set of drawings and build instructions for the Lynx NE15 engine" sufficient ?

… or is there essential extra information in the expensive booklet ?

Read the writing at the bottom of the picture – implies enough info to me. I notice that these special publicatons often include IC engine designs rather than steam engines.

David, is there any chance of putting a preview page on the site much like we can view the contents of the current ME or MEW on the homepage, that way people will know what they are pre ordering.

If its just a reprint of the Lynx articles and drawings that were in the magazine then there is not enough info, the drawings and build notes that Malcom did had all the info.

Also is it available digitally or just in printed form?

                    J

                      Hi There

The magazine includes Malcolm's construction book text and essential photos.

The drawings are A4 rather than the £59 copy which is A3 but they are perfectly readable.

I have left a few photos out of the magazine to save space that were of basic milling and turning but all the essential photographs are included.

The original price of £79.95 was because we had to recover the significant amount of money that we paid for the copyright to Malcolm's engine plans and text.

It took me two years to buy the copyright for the company.

There was also a lot of effort put into doing the original £79 booklet. There were hundreds of photos to sort through (many were similar, duplicates almost) as well as all the text I had to edit. This was not a quick job and although I did not get paid for it, I did it to ensure that the designs would not be lost forever. And for you, the reader's benefit.

I will add a preview page shortly linked from the home page.

It might be available as digital in the future but WH Smith in the UK have sole selling rights.

It will be available in some countries overseas, probably USA, Canada and Australia at least.

However, if overseas I would advise you to Pre-order now while stocks last. I doubt stocks will last long, they are selliing like hot cakes.

                      regards david

That's what I assumed – the drawings would be at the original published size, rather than full size.

Sets of drawings printed on demand will always be more costly – the fixed cost is the same but MHS could sell a thousand times as many copies of the special as the plans.

                              Hi Stub Mandrel

                              Quite right.

For the £79 package someone has to stand at the photocopier, copy 15 A3 plans and 70+ a4 pages then collate them and bind them.

It all takes time wheras once the magazine is being printed, it is obviousley cheaper.

Why £5.99? Because we had two choices, 68 pages at £4.99 or 100 pages at £5.99.

No contest really, 32 pages for an extra £1.

                              regards David

Please note, it will be very easy to use a photocopier to enlarge tha A4 drawings to the original size of A3. This should only cost about 20p a copy so about £3 for all 15 sheets.

This is perfectly legal if copying for your own private use and will keep the magazine clean rather than using it in the workshop.

                                  regards David

Or just scan them into your computer and enlarge parts as needed then print onto A4 or onto A3 if you have a printer like me.

when is it going to be actually really physically available to pick up a real physical copy in the shops ?

If pre ordered ones are due for delivery 27th sept I would assume in the shops 1st week October if its anything like subscription copies.

But don't assume your branch of WHSmith will have it or if they do when they may decide to put it on the shelves if the previous specials are anything to go by.

                                          Hi There

Where did the 27 September come from for Pre-orders?

They were passed for press onTuesday so I assume they are being printed now.

They have to be delivered to WH Smith at least a fortnight early so they can sit in the warehouse.

I suspect they may post them out next week.

Best to order now, I would think at least half the office stock has been sold but won't know until Tuesday when I get the figures.

Like many of us old gits I sometimes find a problem reading the drawings in the magazines, especially the dimensions when in tiny print.

A suggestion (which could create a bit more revenue for MTM):

Most drawings submitted to the magazine now are originated in CAD. Why not make a download in DXF format available to subscribers for a small fee? I can understand why the A3 drawings are expensive if someone has to copy them individually but downloads could be made available with very little work so could be relatively cheap.

CAD drawings could be printed out at any scale and would also make it possible for people to easily modify drawings to suite their particular lathe etc.

                                                  Russell.

                                                    Hi There

Where did the 27 September come from for Pre-orders?

David, suggest you try clicking on the "pre order" button and read what comes up!!

Pre-ordered mine as soon as I got David's email, looks a good selection of articles.. Although I pass by Smith's every week, I find them erratic in their stocking of "specials"
