Just sat down to have a read of the new series on the lister in 4448 and it looks like the "Crankcase side view – block" drawing has been printed twice with the exception of. Few screw holes so is one is missing which I assume shows things like overall hight and position of the upper circular part as there is not enough info ther to make the crankcase

"Pictorial views of crankcase" gives the valve lever pivot point as M3x0.5 but the "plan view" says drill 3.2mm

I have a few other issues but will wait for these two questions to be answered first.

Hi Jason, not duplicated, numbered differently and also some dimensions were different.

I expect all will become clear in the future. There are about 80 drawings in all.

Some photos and very little text.

I started printing the articles on the basis of the drawings would be useful to readers.

            regards david

              Hi Jason

You will have to take drawing problems up with Diane.

All original drawings have been sent to her.

I have virtually no Model Engineer content left other than some articles in email.

              regards David

Thanks DC, I'll wait to see what drawings come in the next issue before I bring it up again. But will chase the differing hole sizes.

I do wonder how many takers there will be for this model, seeing as castings need to be produced you are limiting it to the few backyard foundry owners or the odd person that can make patterns and have it cast.

Having said that I think teh crankcase could be fabricated but will wait for the rest of the series to decide if I make one.

I wonder if on sujects like this if there is a need to put a lot of the drawings onto teh web and keep the mag to a select few?

                  Hi Jason

We have no budget for the web to pay contributors and I am sure most will not want their drawings published with no payment.

                  regards David

Sorry David, can't see the reasoning behind this.

If you have to print 80 odd drawings at £50 a page then the budget is there,

If however just a few were published to keep the article from becoming top heavy than the budget would have approved the balance of the drawings whether they go in print or on the web, either way the author gets his £50 per page ?

Anybody else see this logic ?

You say you have virtually no ME content now ? Does this mean Diane will be picking the other Nemitt engine drawings up ?

If the overall dimensions, wall thickness, web radius etc were published then it may be possible to machine the main casting in two parts ie. LH & RH as opposed to top and bottom.

Just to nitpick, the tapped holes are missing the "M" designation. "M6 x 1.0" instead of "6 x 1.0"

I'd thought of making it like a box from steel plate and weld/solder it together, that way you could get the splay tray and sump in.

Regarding pictures/drawings on the web, I was not suggesting that the designer does not get paid. More something along the lines of having a "subscribers area" where paying subscribers could access additional information like pdf's that can be moved around, DXF. files so you can get parts lazer or waterjet cut. Othe magazines have been doing this for several years such as MEB so why not bring ME and MEW into the 21st centuary.

When I built the Firefly it was very useful having the drawings available on line as they can be blown up so you can see detail that is not reproduced in the mag.

You could even scan in what sketches you have for the Webster portable and let those that are interested make the what they can of them. Or put up the remaining Nemett designs for someone to try and design the missing bits and come up with a working engine.

                          Hi John

I don't see the logic unless we pay for drawings on the web and cut the page count of ME down.

We have a certain amount of money to pay for paper content in ME. We can't use that for web content.

Diane has plenty of articles for ME. I just said I have none left as I have forwarded them to her.

Why would we want to run the Nemett 15cc single again.

It has appeared once even though in dribs and drabs.

Diane may run the Nemett single but that is up to her.

                          regards David

                            David,

                            I meant the 4 cylinder and V6 Nemitt's.

And also the crankcase for the straight six pushrod version which is basically 3 bobcats joined together.

As MHS paid for the rights for ALL the Nemett designs it would be a shame if you did not get your monies worth.

Also on the Missing in Action list the current Bobcat drawings are always one issue in front of the description which is OK but there is nothing on the drawings to state what material the parts are made of or quantity.

                                  Hi John

Someone (Jason?) converted them from alibre to DXF and they have been forwarded to Diane.

I expect she will publish them but the will need some dimensions adding as they are plain drawings without.

There is a lot of information available.

                                  regards David

I added dimensions to virtually all of the V-6 ones and Diane only has to ask for the others.

EDIT, just looked at te straight 4 and thats dimensioned as well though if they are both going to be published a bit of tidying up of the dimensions will be required, I did a lot but not all.

It might require permission from individual but some (probably those who haven't got deals with distributors of plans/castings) might be willing to ut extra details on line.

I would be quite happy for 'supplementary' pictures, drawings, background information to be used online to complement a printed series without expectuing any extra payment. I could also supply links to websites with relevant extra information or even discussion in this forum.

What matters is getting interesting stuff 'out there' and encouraging people to have a go.

For example, I have more pictures of the original canal crane if people wanted to pursue greater fidelity.

I would also be happy for a full set of drawings compiled into a pdf to be posted on line once a series has been completed.

If it was possible for us to upload PDFs as well as pictures to this forum, I suspect many of us might start sharing such information on our own.

I should add that the second installment contained the info that was not in the first issue though the 3mm hole/M3 tapped hole still remains unresolved

I don;t have any more information than you. As for the feet I did a bit of guesswork based on a bit of scaling and the assumption that you original engine would have been made to imperial dimensions. Scaling indicates 3inches by 3 inches as the hole centres equivalent to 18inces by 18 inches on the full scale item.

I see that in issue 4449 additional bits have been added to the casting! It's a good thing that I did not machine the patterns last week! I attach my updated designs. from the section it will be seen that I have tapered the walls of the oil drain box slightly to improve the core strength.
