Sometime in the last 50 years ME had a construction article on making an engraving machine. I started this but work then got in the way and I would now like to complete it. I have searched the index as far as I can but without any success – does anyone have a better memory than me about when the articles appeared? immic the last article was lost/stolen/mislaid . How do I go about obtaining a copy/reprint?

Maybe in 1995? Articles by H A Holland? Volumes 174/5.

          This searchable index may assist.

              Hi Sandy,

If it was 50 years ago it might have been a series by Duplex who wrote up his machine in Volume 110 issues 2758, 2760, 2762, 2764, 2766 & 2768. There were readers questions & answers in later editions. Have a look at Colin Ushers index Volumes 61 to 120.

There are a couple more in Vol 121 onwards.

              Hope this helps. Alan

                Hello Sandy (and all).

I'm in the process of developing a free, modular, application to interface the MEW, the ME and the EiM indexes magazines allowing simple or complex, powerful, queries using the query by form metaphor.

The modules for the MEW and EiM are ready and available to all interested.

There's also an higher level menu to integrate both and in the near future the three modules.

I'm still working in the ME application. However now I'm able to query the database to look for the information You are seeking, following the hints given by Flying Fifer.

If You are interested I can send it to You in an Excel spreadsheet file. I found 146 lines (articles) where the word engraving is written. Just drop me a personal message with Your personal e-mail address.

                Best regards

Here's hoping Mr. Costa will post a link to his MEW consolidated index. Would make it a lot easier than searching the 15 + indexes that are included in the MEW issues – one per year, give or take.

                            Hello SpringBok!

                            Yes, You are right.

However I would like to say…

I'm still developing the ME module.

As in the already working interface modules for the MEW and EiM indexes, all the information will be in only one database.

                            So:

1 – The user won't need to jump from file to file seeking an article.

2 – The user will have access to all the information in the articles files and also to the date information file available which I will transparently link to the articles information. This way the date information will also be searchable toghether with the other information.

3 – The user will be allowed to add its own comments to each Article, each Author or each Category.

4 – The user will have the power to do queries using complex criteria. This feature is not usually available in a spreadsheet program.

The following improvements are in my plans:

1 – Improve the querying mechanism to allow the user to use negation in criteria for queries.

2 – Create conditions to allow the user to look for information in all the indexes (MEW, ME, EiM), simultaneously, transparently.

                            Best regards

                              Hello TerryD!

I use Firefox to access to the address You point. After writing a criterium and clicking on the button Search nothing happens.
The alternatives I know are the Internet Explorer and Chrome.
Internet Explorer doesn't work in Linux and sometimes this is my environment.
Chrome is owned by Google which is following the path of Microsoft in some behaviour I don't like. So… Also by idiosyncrasy I stand with Mozilla/Firefox.

                              Just my two cents…

                                Hello Dunc!

I can't post a link to the MEW + EiM application, at least by now, because I don't have one. Meaning I don't have an HTTP server permanently open.
Some weeks ago I opened my personal HTTP server to allow some people testing the applications to download it and I can do it again if needed (the failed attacks were so much…). That's the reason why, for awhile, I would prefer to be myself uploading the files by e-mail, if possible.
So if You want to use the application You have two options: You let me know some e-mail address of Yours OR tell me Your time-zone and an interval of 2 or three hours You can start downloading the files.

                                Best regards

I can put the file on one of my websites if you wish.

Then anyone can download it at anytime.

                                    Hello David!

Thank You very much for Your offer.

                                    How can we do that?

May I upload the files to one of Your servers, at any time, as soon as I'll have a new version, any correction or improvement?

At this moment this is the scenary:

Two of the modules (MEW and EiM) are ready to be used (although they are also an unfinished work. And subject to eventual corrections..).

There's an integrating menu for both applications. It will be augmented to support the ME application when it will be ready. This menu will eventualy support a module to query all the three mags as a all.

In the near future and for awhile I'll do the preparation of the flat (CSV) files to update the information to newest issue of the three mags. Later on the users shell download themselves the CSV files and take care of the updates of their interest.

                                    Best regards

                                        Hi Dias,

I use FF12 (beta) as it is open source – I have the same philosophy as yourself on the matter of IE and Chrome – and have had no problem searching the MEW index on the site that I linked to. I typed in 'Hall' in the search field, selected 'Author' in the target field and it found all of Harold Hall's articles immediately. I then typed in 'screwdriver' and it found two relevant articles when the target field was left as 'All'. Searching for 'Engine' came up with 5 pages of results, but that is a rather general term. I don't have a problem with that – works for me, I'm not sure why you get no response – strange.

                                        Best regards

                                        Terry

                                          Hello David.

I've not answered You before because I've been a little busy simplifying the EiM index application before delivering it. In the previous version the user had to convert the Excel file to the CSV format before importing the data. From now on the conversion from Excel to the CSV format is made internally by the program and then the importing process is started. Hope will be ready tommorrow.

Once again, thank You very much for Your offer for hosting my files.

As I told You before I need a little more dynamic to manage corrections or new upgrade version of files, eventually maintain multiple versions/moments of the data base files, register suggestions and criticisms made by the users, etc.

Since long ago I had in mind to create a web site of my own, for other order of reasons, but until now I hadn't had enough motivation.

This is the moment to go ahead with the creation of such a website and so I can put there the files at my own pace.

In a few days I'll have the site working or at least able to allow download files from.

                                          Best regards
