        I was interested in Photo 9 on page 631 (Stooperdale Boiler works). Can anyone tell me what was being done to the boiler in this photo ? And why was the boiler mounted in this unnatural vertical position.

          I’ve had the same problem trying to get swarf out of a boiler
           
          Actually if you look at the bottom right you can see they are using a Hydraulic? riviting gun and there is probably a fixed dolly on the top of that black column going up inside the boiler/firebox. It was likely easier to rotate the boiler around the dolly than move the rivit gun around the boiler.

            I can remember the boiler riviting tower at the old Loco works in Crewe it was just oposite my Grandmothers house, as Jason said I think it must have bin easier to build the boiler up as more of it was exposed to work on, those old rivet guns made hell of a racket.
