Is it just me, but following the discussions in ME relating to boiler inspection and captive spindle valves, I dont remember seeing any designs (or very few) showing approved valves. All of M.Evans, LBSC and lately Ray McMahon show non captive spindles. Apologies in advance if I am wrong.
Can anyone point me to some suitable approved designs for a typical 5″ loco.
Also whilst on my hobby horse, why do we have drawings that were drawn in fractions of an inch re-printed in decimal inches. I thought CAD was so good that it could still use fractions. For example Peter Rich 5″ GWR shows on the plan 0.312″ for 5/16, 0.281 for 9/32 and a classic 1/4 x 1/4 x 0.062 angle etc, etc I can just about measure 9/32 on a steel rule, but never 0.281″ (Sorry Peter as I can guess how much hard work and dedication for the enjoyment of others goes into writing an article) I guess that we all have CNC mills and lathes now with DROs. Has a survey ever been taken as to how many readers still rely on rulers, or will we see yet another division of the Model Engineer into ”N/c ME and ‘Fractional ME’ ???
