Has anyone found a free equivalent to microsoft works, especially Word and Publisher.

I do not use them enough to warrent paying for a package that I will only use three or four times a year.

If I was to use them a lot of the time then paying would not be a problem

Plus one for LibreOffice but it will be hard to make a judgment about any program that is used only three or four times a year!

Note that Libre uses its own format to save so you have to make a special copy for sending to people who use MS.

Not sure what publisher provides but you may need some other program for that.

Not exactly. Libre outputs Open Document Format, which is non-proprietary. MS-Word should be able to read it. By default MS-Word uses proprietary files, which other software can usually read, but not necessarily perfectly.

For ordinary purposes, not doing anything advanced, Libre/Word incompatibility doesn't seem to a major problem. Your mileage may vary!!!

Libre (and MS-Word) can both work with a long list of other file formats.

One advantage of libre that I found when I was teaching, libre will often open Word files that MS word won't, resaving as word files then fixes the issue for Word.

I found Libre Office can open more old legacy file types than Open Office so I only use LO now.

The interface on both is not that good in my opinion but it can be customised to some extent which is well worth doing.
