Privet Hawk? ..I think Elephant are usually quite a bright green & pink, and the dark bars on these wings look distinctive.

..but I could be wrong, there are a lot of them and I think migrant blow-ins also turn up..

In any question of 'what is this critter?' it is hugely helpful if we are told which country is involved.

Trying to find a japanese moth in an austrian moth book is never easy.

Just a reminder – Cheers, Tim

I'm reliably informed by an app on my phone that it is Sphinx Ligustri or privet hawk moth.

Sorry Tim NN6 UK . It was sitting half way up a recently creosoted gate post with it's back due north.

                      I think that’s a question for a naturalist rather than a naturist.

To be fair, Diogenes got there before me, and without technological assistance – I wouldn't have had a clue otherwise.

                            My apologies to DiogenesII.

I spotted this pretty beastie on a climber near our front door last month and according to the identifier I think it’s a Scarlet Tiger.

It might be a good find in the South East  as normally in the South West & Wales apparently.

People might say you're a peeper, in that case, who spies on naturists going about their lawful business.

                                            Hi Nick

The magic phone app was straight in there with Eyed Hawkmoth. Just realised I could have passed myself off as some sort of expert if I hadn't mentioned the app wink

Edit – V8Eng's picture IS a Scarlet Tiger, and Bernard's is an Elephant Hawkmoth caterpillar. Move over David Attenborough!
