Can I appeal to forum members. particularly new ones, to give their approx geographical location.

i am in the process of dismantling my workshop and am having to throw away metals and bits and bobs of tools because eg mod eng clubs don't answer my emailed offers.

I like to think that there must be struggling deserving beginners in the Grantham area who would be grateful for almost anything, just as I was twenty-five years ago.

Merlin, can I suggest that you lead by example and fill in a public profile, that way people can get an idea of location etc. Try it by clicking my name above my avitar, far better than getting "this member does not have a profile" when clicking your name.

Oh dear, I wish I hadn't started this.

I apologise for not giving my area – I confused this forum with another.

If I click on your profile I learn something about you, but can't see any opportunity to say that I live about 10 miles east of Grantham.

There is no 'my account' or anything like that.

But please be general – it's not a good idea to advertise exactly where you are.

I second your advise but if I was being really critical I would say that it sounds a bit negative and might discourage someone who otherwise might not have worried about doing it.

Like the OP I would like all members to give an indication of location, town, city, county, or as a last resort their country!

I can see no earthly reason why anyone would not give their location to (say) within 50 miles, however some folk seem to think it a violation of their human rights!

                        Ian,

Some of us, myself included, work in industries where it would not be particularly safe to give to much information about location etc so there are some earthly reasons why people dont do it.

                              Now I'm intrigued!

Although qualifying your remark with 'too much' indicates that you might consider stating a county or city?

I can imagine in some industries/businesses (where animals are used for cosmetics testing, GM crops research, anti abortion etc) people might not want a determined opposer going to lengths to locate them as a target.

On a positive note Martin you do at least use your real name……

Then again if you used a non-de-plume it would not matter if you stated a location.

It's such a personal decision, i can't figure why some people get stressed about others keeping their location to themselves.

My advice to those who want to show where they are without pinpointing themselves, is to tick the 'show my county/state' box on their profile – but remember to fill it in on your details page.

Thanks for steering me, Les Jones 1 – of course it is there, it always is, one just has to keep on clicking.

The sensible way to get rid of all these bits – noggin ends in brass and steel, odd lathe tool bits, MT adapters, good odd-size imperial drills, assorted used hand reamers up to 1/2" diam, 1/2" drill chucks on 2 MT etc, is to get up unnaturally early one Sunday morning and stand in the rain over a sagging pasting table haggling with people who were born to haggle and want to pay as little as possible, no matter the asking price.

I admit to being both old and lazy (some would say grumpy) and I will now 'Over and out'

                                  Andrew Johnston's location is familiar.

                                      Re advertising your approx location.

What I originally had in mind was that from time to time people, often new members, ask for help in setting up in some way or ask for practical advice, and if their area was by the side of their name on the screen, readers might be prompted to become involved more closely.

Not everyone knows or can remember how to send a private message.

With less than a minute of your time, using the power and might of Google, you can find Martin's occupation, address, phone number, autobiographical profile and even a self portrait photograph. I've no idea why he would need to fear visitation by dark forces.

It's as old as time. A wants to foist his or her beliefs on B and gets frustrated when B won't play ball. After all, how could anyone not want to emulate A?

What is harder to understand is the apparent belief that B is then obliged to justify his "uncooperative" attitude.

I'd have thought a classified Ad listing what was being offered, including contact details would be a good way to do this.
