Hi, my old garage wooden doors are rotted out and need replacement. I have been looking at electric roller doors and have a few questions. I know that carador are good quality and they are only down the road from me. But nearly £4000 for a single door is a bit much. I have seen doors for sale on eBay and Facebook, but think that these are of Chinese origin and any warranty would be worthless if called on. So can anyone point me in the direction of a good quality insulated door for a single garage which they had fitted and they are happy with. Thanks.

There's Lymers up the road in Leek Link . They did our sectional door a couple of years ago but we decided not to motorise it. They were competitive at the time and no complaints about quality or the fitters. They do all styles/types and motorise if required.

Oops I read Michael Gilligan not Michael Callaghan sorry if you're not this way blush

Consider one with an external override lock if you have no internal access from the house.

            Big panels are better.

I have had a Teckentrup (Cartech) door for years, Yale lock hidden behind the makers name plate.

Needs an 8ft clear run I had to attack a brick pillar with the chisel to get clearance.never had any trouble. Fitted myself

Hi. I have a double door from Rollerdoor fitted. A bit cheaper than garadoor I think but it was fitted when I bought the house. Three years I have lived here and I am happy with it. I would imagine most parts are made in china whoever is selling them nowadays.

I’ve had a roller door from Access doors for about 10 years. Very space saving and insulates making it ok to work in with 20 minutes of a fan fire. I found Access ok to deal with and the installation is neat. I just had to provide a 13a socket.

My electric roller door was fitted in 2017 by a local firm. Cost £1395. A 13 amp socket was already to hand. Works fine, no problems as yet.

Had a single garage roller door fitted by a local firm for £780 all done – back in 2018. Your quote for 4K seems rather excessive!!

One thing to watch – assuming you are going to put a car in the garage – is the width of the mechanism at the side. I have considered replacing my old up and overs with rollers, but the side mechanisms takes more space than I can afford if I still want to get the car in.

When we had the new garage built, I ordered the door from Garage Doors Online.
                        https://www.garagedoorsonline.co.uk/shop/roller+door
My builder and I fitted it as part of the overall job.
I went for an electric, insulated, sectional, woodgrain, with no external locks visible.
In 2017, it was a little over £2000 delivered, and made by Hormann.

I had to wait a bit longer than the normal delivery window, as I chose a metric one, rather than imperial, as it gave a few extra inches of headroom for the Discovery and van etc. so I had to wait whilst it was made specially for me in Germany.

Seemed a decent firm and very helpful on the phone.

There's a few photos either side of this one showing the internal runners.

You need a panel door like myself and Peak they go inside the door opening so you get full door width and when it opens everything is above door height.

                            Hi Micheal,

Had a double Premier door fitted last year by rollerdor of Norwich.

Extremely happy with it. Rollerdor do a nationwide service which of course includes a no obligation survey.

Check out their website, Rollerdor, one o in door.

My partners mother had a single elactic roller door fitted by a local chap one year ago. It cost her £2000 . It is a brilliant piece of work. Very reliable. I am impressed with it.

                              She lives in Priorslee Telford.

That would work for width, but then I would loose the 10 inch thickness of the brick pillars in the overall length, and with a 2020 SUV and a 1970's integral garage I only have about four inches spare in length. The only real answer is a smaller car!!

We have a double width door by Steel Line, installed by a local chappie. Good kit and they do an insulated option. The insulated ones are panels, which usually slide up and along runners at ceiling height – kiss goodbye to any suspended storage of timber etc. Also lighting battens might need shifting. Peak4's photo shows the problem.

Also beware of draughts around the head of the door. That can make a mockery of "insulation" and lets a lot of dust in if you are thinking of painting anything.

I installed a Gliderol motor as a Diy job. Simple enough, but I needed some scaffold tower to take the weight of the door while one end bracket is removed and the motor slid along the pivot tube. The motor will require a bit more width in the door rebate. The door runners also take about 3 inches off the opening width – something to check with your supplier. Have also had a couple of issues with the motor that needed the scaffold to sort them out.

When my "UP-and-OVER" door mechanism failed I did a really cheap repair. Works for me!

Thanks chaps. The £4000 is for a carador with all the bells and whistles. You need to get it fitted or they will not honour the warranty. I agree it’s an awful lot of money for a garage door. Apart from carador who I know use all English made items, I think that the rest use Chinese bits and bobs to max out profits. Due to having an office build into the Centre section of the garage roof which means I can’t fit an up and over which would work out a lot cheaper for sure. I have asked a number of National firms for quotes in the coming week, so will take it from there. Thanks

Several years ago I went for a electrically operated Horman door, just over 6 metres, very good door. Its made from hinged panel, insulation is an option ,watch out for the cheap ones,a neighbour has one that is just one sheet with lots of folded creases which rolls onto a drum, dont know how long it will last. When you are older the electric door allows you to drive up to the door ,you open it with remote control drive in park the car ,walk to the house and then close it by remote. I built my garage away from the house, safer regarding fire risk etc.

Roller doors – advantages – quite well insulated and good draught-proofing My experience as follows.

Two singles fitted 5 years ago.
                                          One side OK to date.
Other side failed after 2 years – tubular motor.
                                          Manufacturers had disappeared.
Installer said impossible to repair – only way forward would be 2 new doors as colour match impossible.
Replaced tubular motor myself – plenty available (suspicious?)
Had to manufacture a different octagonal coupling out of plastic as direct replacement not available.
Fitted and has been OK for 3 years

The tubular motors do run hot and are in a small cavity, but do not operate for long periods so seem to be OK for most – just not wonderful.
Would I have them again – yes, but from another source!

Mine is thin gauge corrugated steel as described. Ours has put in 17 years so far. By the way, it faces south west straight down the Drumochter pass, so we only get an occasional slight brèeze. NOT!
