I am always amazed at the number of ads in theclassified section that have no photos.

      Why is this I wonder?

Maybe its because some of us dont know how to link a photo to an add?

We cant all be as clever/smart ( insert your own adjective) as some on here…….

Maybe some folk dont have a suitable device to take photos…..

          Why the criticism?

I didn't see it as a particular criticism. Just a simple statement that it's surprising that there aren't more photos in a service that really begs for pictures.

            I know I'm surprised.

(Responses such as yours also seem mildly surprising, given the practical, hands-on nature of this venue).

If the only camera you own is a 120 roll film type, the help suggested by the moderator is not a solution.

It may come as a shock to presumably to a younger generation that computer and mobile phones are not in universal ownership. I can only access this forum via equipment passed to me by my daughter with instruction minimal, and a lot of trial and error.

If you don't know what a toolpost, book or item is why would you even look at the advt at all????????

I seem to have ruffled your fathers, sorry. It was a simple observation, thats all.

In responce thought, as you pointed out computers and mobile phones are not in universal ownership and agree that not everyone is savy with new technology. However I would say thats the same here, not everyone knows what a particular brand or make of a piece of equipment is and a photo helps to clarify. Sometime no photo can convey that the seller is not very bothered about selling.

Wether we like it or not we are now in a technological age where a great deal of business is done on the iternet and where mobile phones now outnumber land lines.

I used to be in sales and know the power of a well written advert with photos will always come accross better than a few lines of text.

eBay, again a love it loath it place, is now huge and good ads will attract buyers more that one liners with no photos.

…. and yet the ads in question are posted on an internet website by means of digital computers, which implies at least a working familiarity on the part of the advertisers. And as far as having the means and ability to take digital pictures, just take a look at the users of this forum and the number of photos posted beside (most) names.

I don't understand your final comment at all.

Look, I realise and respect that there are some who just don't fit (and probably don't want to) into the digital age and others who do so to a greater or lesser degree but most people here do have some ability in this respect and it seems remarkable, as PH said, that there aren't more pics to go along with the ads.

The moderator just looked on wondering why people worry about what other people choose to do

I think the answer in many case is simple. People are used to classified just being text in a magazine, so they might not have a photo when they come to post an ad.

Apart from anything else when buying remotely I like to see what I'm getting and a few decent photos make a difference.

Mr Moderator. We have exchanged emails on this subject

Sid h et. al. My last sentence was to suggest that if an advt stated " 20 copies of MEW mint condition" why exactly would you need a photo. If you do not want copies why would you investigate the advt . In the first instance????

I think that is a very good reason to have a photo one persons idea of mint may be different to anothers, same with things like "light surface rust" and "as new"

A quick glance at a photo can save a lot of time for both parties, buyers don't need to spend more time reading the full add or contacting the seller for more detail if they can see the item is not what they like the look of. On the other hand it will save the seller getting lots of enquiries for more info/photos etc.

Curiously, the feedback I get is that the text-only ads in the magazines work as well, if not better than the website ones.

A person placing an advert is perfectly free to do it in any way that is convenient to them.

It is, however, worth remembering the old adage “a picture is worth a thousand words”

Presumably, we all agree that there are times when a photo would be helpful.

As an example, I recently bought a Perfecto shaper via the MEW magazine small ads which was described in the ad as an Adept.

I would agree that a photo' or two is a good idea when selling, but I am used to no pictures. Have travelled all over to buy stuff ,inc. bikes and cars. Pictures can be doctored, sure you all know that. I prefer a good description because I can get a better idea of the sellers knowledge and experience. Just my old fashioned ideas. I have tried to take photos and send them, just to show that I do make things and do not own an armchair, but only have a phone and it's not good at pictures. Not yet got to the downloading (uploading ?).
