I went to an auction yesterday that had a lot of machines and tooling like the listing and that listing would have been lucky to clear £2000 if it was at the auction i attended

I wasn't suggesting it was a good price mate, just a sad epitaph to someone's life…….the smock hanging up says it all ……

Don't suppose it will matter one way or tother once we shuffle off Ian, but if you're anything like me, the missus will be under the illusion that your workshop contents are worth bugger all……some lucky sod will get a bargain

I know the gentleman who that workshop belonged to he was an exceptional engineer, some of the things I have seen him make were unbelievable, including an oil pump, with a 3:1 reduction gear in it, that was an inch in diameter, and 3/4 inch thick.

It was a sad day when he passed, I had only been there a couple of weeks before having a brew and a natter with him

Seems a bit 'sky in the pie' to me.

A second hand warco and chester.

Not exactly earth shattering.

£20,000?!

I dealt with these matters on countless occasions as a club secretary approached to deal with a deceased member's workshop contents which so far as the family were concerned were worth a fortune as convinced by them by the deceased, before becoming deceased.

A tricky situation.

Quite often its the bits around the main machine that took the money. Spare chucks, tooling, rotary tables and the like not to mention good tapa and dies. Problem being is that a job lot devalues the 'value' of the collection, but it takes time and effort to advertise individual lots.

Quite clearly whoever charged with selling doesn't have a clue how to maximise the return on what they have.

they've had a quick butchers at the cost prices, added them roughly together and formed a guesstimate.

It could fetch good money if split up into individual lots, although I doubt even then that there's anywhere near £20k

in it, unless those drawers and cabinets are stuffed full of nice things.

There is a lot of extras in there over and above the machine prices, for instance there is a unit full of taps and die’s in every conceivable type of thread and size that has got to have a new value of over 3k, there is every imaginable chuck and work holding device for all the machines, gear cutting equipment, dividing heads, more measuring than I have ever seen in one place, and that just scratches the surface of what is in there.

But as others have said it’s not being marketed very well, but there is no one else in the family who knows anything about engineering, even after the man in question trying his hardest to get them involved 🙁

Hello all, Ive told my wife a number of times that whatever she does, dont let the scrap man have anything. Just pick up the phone and contact one of the preserved railways, West Somerset, Vale of Berkeley, Bodmin etc. Im pretty sure they would jump at the chance of some useful equipment. Apart from the odd battery drill, Im pretty sure she or the kids wont want anything. Thats my wish anyway.

It’s a funny market to be fair. That mill is nearly 5k new and it looks like he’s added power feeds to all axis and a dro so probably another 1.5k on top.
Sadly it probably won’t make a great deal secondhand and be slow to move. Yet clapped out old Bridgeports seem to be fetching strong money and shift easily.

all the students didnt make £500

all the excell optimums d420 didnt make 400

bridgeport with dro and slotting head made 450

the 2 modern emco cnc's made £4000

a tooling cabinet full of lathe tooling for 12 lathes only made £180

P.S a dealer already has one of each lathes on ebay

Yes, Ian. Mind you, would you pay 30 quid plus for a tool chest that only cost 100 new, or a similar amount for a handful of cheap multimeters? I did fancy a leather, executive swivel chair for the mancave as befits a Club News Editor of my stature, but there isn't room in there to swing cat!
