One of these days it will happen, and become a permanent fixture

A round the world airship cruise would be cool, like the Graf Zeppelin

Plus there's all those inaccessible places it can get to

Airlander 10: New pictures of world's longest aircraft

New photographs of the world's longest aircraft have been released, before it is unveiled for the first time.

The Airlander 10 is 302ft (92m) long, which is about 60ft (18m) longer than the biggest airliners.

A British firm has spent the last nine years developing the prototype in the UK's biggest aircraft hangar, Cardington in Bedfordshire.

It will be floated inside the hangar for the first time since its completion on Monday.

The airship, which cost £25m to build, can stay in the same spot for three weeks and can even fly with bullet holes in it.

Isn't that what they call an oxymoron?

More interesting, we are told there's a helium shortage and filling 12 of those a year would take 10% of 2008 global production, before leaks…

P.s. Is it me or does the second photo look like a huge bottom?

wholesale helium is about £50 per 1000 cu.ft, this is 1.3 million to fill, so its 5 pence per cuft, making it £65000 to fill up. Cheap at twice the price!

If I go upstairs to the main bedroom I can see the hangers across a couple of fields, the airship was built and developed in America, its only been in Cardingdon Hangers for a couple of years when it was brought back from the USA.

Over the years there have been several different airships seen flying around from different companies, the GOODYEAR blimp for instance.

As an aside one of the hangers has just had several million spent on a complete refurbishment and re cladding.

I spent a lot of my childhood at RAF Cardington and for some of that my old man had his office in one of the hangers so i was in there quite a bit. The open days were fun .. they'd partially inflate a barrage balloon with air and let the kids climb inside and slide about on the fabric.

When we first movd to shortstown one of our neighbours was an R101 survivor..although i was too young to remember much about him..

I wish any airship project well but it just strikes me that the payload potential just isn't there. And i's all very well to say it can land anywhere..but usually these things are so huge they need ground support and serious tethering arrangements available.

Oh well … might as well join in:

When we lived in Biggleswade [early 1970s], we lived next-door to a chap who had been one of the 'rivet-catchers' when they built those hangars.

Helium is not 'produced' as that implies that we can make more. No, what there is is all there is, and it is not clear why we should want to waste it.

I don't think helium is used up, it's more or less inert. Catching the stuff is a different matter, and probably quite expensive.

Helium is so light that it can escape earth gravity and fly off into space. This is why there is so little in the earth's atmosphere. It is however continually being produced in the bowels of the earth by decay of many radioactive minerals. Alpha particles are just helium nuclei and once they pick up electrons then they become helium atoms.

The helium released by radioactivity in the earth sometimes gets trapped in porous rock formations capped by impervious rocks. These are just the same formations that trap oil and natural gas which is why most of the helium produced commercially is extracted from natural gas.

The only real source of Helium is natural gas from Texas where it can be about 8% of the produced gas. It is far too valuable to remain with the hydrocarbon gases so it is separated out. When Helium is released to the atmosphere it is gone. Once the gas fields have been emptied that is it, no more Helium. The other sources, radio-active decay and the atmosphere, yield minute trace amounts, nothing.

The likely disappearance of Helium is scientifically a major concern. It is far too valuable to be used to blow up balloons and, perhaps, airships.

It was unveiled on BBC Look East our local news programme weeks ago, in its inflated state because the company wanted to unveil it having its Cupola fitted, so no real news to us locals

It was originally a $500m dollar design contract for the US army, who then decided not to go ahead with it, and the airship and the rights were bought back by Airlander. Still think it would be a mite dodgy in a strong breeze!

I well recall my first visit to Cardington and the way the size of those airship hangers completely distorted perception of distance based on normal sized structures. When you fist see them from the road they are about 6 times further away than you think. Shades of childhood "Are we nearly there yet Dad?"

We hired the Skyship 600 as a flying laboratory for a week straight after the James Bond film guys had finished with it. Still in film make up. Great experience. First time out I was unworried by sitting next to a big window with the glass taken out. Being shaken up and down whilst the ground crew fiddled with sandbags to get near neutral buoyancy was quaint. "This will be fun. Gonna be a nice gentle floaty-floaty ride." Yeah. Right. Not. Mr Pilot says "All got your seat belts on?" The ducted fans swivel into take off position, two big turbocharged Porsche motors spin up to maximum continuous power and the thing shoots off like a Tempest on full bore scramble take-off. Chours of Whaat the F…. or words to that effect from a the cabin. Assume Mr pilot has big "Gottem" grin.

Darned if I know how anybody can fly one though. It was so slow reacting that when turning, for example, the pilot would make the control demand for the right amount of time and pretty much have the controls back to the normal straight ahead position before it started to turn.

                                                      Clive.
