Hi all – Can anyone provide a link to a suitable units conversion calculator., specifically, converting thous/inch to microns/metre. The sites I have discovered appear to be limited to straight forward unit to unit conversions as opposed to a unit/unit to unit/unit conversion.

What's the difference? Just use the calculator on your phone or computer. Exactly 25.4mm in an inch, everything flows from that.

How does that come into play?

Thous per inch is dimensionless. There are 1000 thous in one inch. Thus one thou per inch is a _ratio_ of 1 in 1000.

Microns per metre is also dimensionless. There are one million (10^6) microns in one metre. So 1000 microns per metre would be the same ratio of 1 in 1000.

Does it really need a calculator, as DC31K says you should be able to multiply by 1000 in your head but first hit on google gives a calculator where you can fill in the first box and get result in the second

I do not think I said anything about multiplying in anyone's head. My comment was more to point out the irrelevance of 25.4 to the problem in hand.

It is not answering his original question, but it just struck me that there is a one-to-one correspondence between thou per inch and microns per MILLIMETRE. The same one to one correspondence is between thou per inch and millimetres per metre.

My conversion calculator is now a slide ruler, very quick and, generally, quite accurate enough.

Somethimes the old ways are still good.

Really cannot see the problem and why the controversy from John Haine's post 1/25.4 = .039370078740157 thus for general workshop use use 0.03937 and multiply your mm to get inches or divide your inches to get mm — simples !

If you want or need microns then use the whole conversion factor.

OP question was how to convert from thous per inch, which is dimensionless, to micron per metre, which is similarly dimensionless. As 1 micron is a millionth of a metre, 1000 microns per metre is the same numerically as 1 thou per inch, no calculation required apart from multiplying by 1000. I must admit to wondering what on the scale of metres needs measuring to microns

Perhaps the op has expressed his problem in too simple a manner for us to understand his dilemma. Maybe he has a to make a component with a taper expressed as say 20 thou per foot and his mill is all metric so he just can't get his head around how to set it up.

No it was the fact that the conversion was a factor of 1000 which you said, so should not require a calculator to convert eg

367thou/inch = 367,000microns/meter

If the question had been how to convert thou to microns then yes a calculator and 25.4 come into play but that is not what teh OP seems to be asking.

Here it is entered into that online calculator I posted yesterday as you can see just multiply the imperial by 1000 which should be possible in your head

Or if you want to do it long hand you can see that the answer is 1000 times larger than the original imperial value

So as a practical example if the OP has a Taper as Bazyle suggests of say 367thou / inch (0.367/1) then in metric that would be 367,000microns / meter or 367mm / meter. or 0.367m / m which sounds rather like the imperial length/length we started with. Plot it on CAD if you need proof that the angle is the same.

Why make life complicated when it isn't?

If you want a ready to hand conversion chart, set up a matrix.

One for thous to mm and another for mm to thous, with say Tens along the top and units down the side. The cells in the matrix will have all been calculkated using the factor 25.4

You can either do each calculation with a calulator (Many have the facility to set the factor as a constant to make it simpler ) or make up a spreadsheet in EXCEL

Having got the numbers in the cells, print off and ideally laminate so that it stays wipe clean.

If the dimensions you wish to convert are larger, find a suitable number and mulktiply nthe result by 10.

That should make conversions at a glamce.

If (and only if) you use an iPhone/iPad you might try PCalc, available at the App Store.

Technically orientated with many useful features and functions.

Your mileage may vary.

Well, Jason has already provided the info on how to find it, but here is the specific link REQUESTED LINK

Type in your thous per inch at the left and the answer will appear on the right in microns per metre. Easy peasy.

To answer Duncan Edwards question. I have a Heidenhain DRO display unit Model VRZ 760B which makes provision for various parameteric corrections e.g. Linear Error Compensation on X, Y and Z where values to be entered are expressed in terms of microns/metre. Thanks to all who provided assistance

There are a number of phone apps that do unit conversion. I use Jo Shop Pro.
