Ok I'm being a bit cheeky here, i want to set up a hobby website of my very own.

I've had a good look & try at common CMS options and decided on Joomla.

Drupal immediately asked me to update – and once I eventually unearthed tht how too it was a nightmare.

WordPress was easy enough, but seems a bit noddy and very blog orientated.

Joomla seems to be in the middle with a one-click update system!

But…any tips on getting up and running with Joomla (please don't post lots of recommendations to use other CMSs – I have done a lot more research than the above suggests, I just wanted a look at the 'competition' )?

it;s about 5/6yrs ago that i set up a joomla site.. so if I can figure it out I;m sure a bright bloke like you will ('cos my memory of how i did has faded). The problem at the time was joomla turned out not to be secure enough and it got hacked, blocked by google as a result and the whole thing turned into a nightmare.. probably why now they've improved the update system. As I recall it was very permissions based and heirarchical – forever having to manually change the priority order…

            Hi Neil

I started to set up a Joomla site last year….. got it up and running. And there has been no problems with the software. I hosted it with a company called Siteground. I chose them because they do the Joomla updating in the background (after I approve it but it can be automatic) . I get a "Clean site" report each week; they check if it has been hacked and report.

The Joomla interface is easy enough to learn. The hard part is choosing the right template to use, templates are developed by third parties. some are free and some you pay for once while others you pay for by subscription. I have stuck to the free ones.

Having never set up a web site before getting started was a bit challenging; I found some helpful videos at the host site. I just followed them step by step, they are really quite good. Brian Teeman a Brit is clear and to the point.

My only caveat is the time it takes to create a reasonable looking site. It is very much a work in progress.

The name was chosen because it is easy to search in Google.

              Thanks John,

The first one I clicked showed me how to do something I had tried to do and failed!

I will have a browse around the site, whilst listening to the wonderful Yo-Yo Ma playing Bach on the Prom.
