Hi, I am looking for some assistance regarding a passed down chester v16 milling machine. This machine once plugged in will illuminate the speed LCD with 0000 but will not turn on when you press the green button, am I doing something wrong?, im sure it was being used up to the passing of the owner so I cant imagine whats gone wrong with it, im useless at electrics, Are there companies that will look at it of do they only repair the big commercial machines? Any help would be much appreciated.

Do you have the manual?

Is there a guard around the spindle? If so, it nay need to be in the correct place for the machine to operate…..(not swung to one side…)

Does the Green button latch in when pressed?

Any blown fuses

It may be worth checking the brushes on the motor, you will need to remove the motor housing to get to them…

It's almost certainly one of the safety interlocks.
Give the red stop button a twist to release it and make sure the chuck guard is closed.

Hi James

I have one of these – and a manual if you need anything. Alex is likely right if the button has been pushed accidentally perhaps during transportation.

Also there are two fuses in the switch box that are easily accessed from the rear.. Hope that's all it is – i think its a great machine.

Let me know if you need any more info..

Hi, I cant see any micro switches on the machine and there is no guard to cover the spindle, the single fuse in the back of the electrics box is also good,

When I turn the power on and open the emergency stop cover and press the green button, nothing happens, then when I press the red button you can feel vibration through the button and hear a kind of buzzing noise coming from behind it.

I think im best off taking it somewhere for a qualified person to look at, or can you send them back to chester to have them look at it as I also need a new x axis handle.

hmmm – something is not right then…
Could be a broken red button or a lose connection. They are a bit Chinese…..

Suggest a local someone to have a quick look before you contact Chester.
I have in the past had very good service from them and they may well try and talk you through their thoughts on the phone.

Hi James, being that you feel and hear a kind of buzzing when you press the red button after pressing the green button suggests to me that the start/stop is working OK. The buzzing you feel/hear is not unusual on this type of NVR (No Volt Release)

It seems that the power is not getting to the motor for some other reason, I assume you have tried turning the speed control up from the zero position after you have pressed the green button. I'm not familiar with this machine, but on my mini mill the speed control has to be at zero when you attempt to start it and then turn the control up to the speed you want. If I don't start off with the speed control at zero, a fault light comes on and the motor will fail to turn and I have to stop it and start again.
