      Hi,

      I am attempting to cut some bevel gears on a vertical mill, and would like to know the best dia to start the tooth cut , the small or the large.

          Hi Tony,

          I assume you are cutting constant depth bevels. In practice it's not critical, but if you can arrange it so that all the cuts start from the small end of the gear (and have this facing outwards for visibility, if mounted on a stub mandrel in a chuck).

          This is because all three (or both if you are brave) cuts pass through the same point at the small end and it should be easy to judge if the cutter is too high or low when you do the 'blank rol'l and reset the cutter, simply by offering the stationary cutter up to the small end.

            Thanks Neil,

            To be honest Im struggling a bit ! I am making a differencial for a buggy and have never cut bevel gears before, and the maths for the teeth and cutter size is new to me.

                Hi Neil,

                they need to be 45 deg with a pitch dia at the small end of 1.000 I thought 20 teeth would be ok and have a 26-35 cutter, I am using a vertical mill and a dividing head.
