This is a Windows-specific program, so I dug-out my little Samsung NetBook, which runs Windows 7

The download is available at: **LINK**

      https://picaxe.com/software/picaxe/picaxe-editor-6/index.html#download

and there is a helpful note there about

      .Net Framework 3.5.1

      … So far, so good.

But when I try to install the PicAxe software, it warns me about .Net needing to be installed [which it is] and it fails with the error message:

      PICAXE Editor Installer Information

Error 2732. Directory Manager not initialized.

      crying 2

      .

      Help … Please !!

Probably an update gets it going

I had to download something for my world of tanks a few months ago, not happy to do it but I did

…and Alibre V23 suddenly worked flawlessly on my W7 64 bit system

I've tried to find what it was for you but I haven't found it yet

edit: oh you lucky dog, I found it

Now this may not fix things, but it didn't mess me up either and Alibri magically got up and running

            Thanks for that Ady yes

I did a ‘normal’ update on the machine before I started … but there is a long list of ‘optional’ updates that I have never installed, so I will check through those later.

Need to go out to buy food and drink now !

              Michael,

Plenty of info on the Picaxe forum.

You are not on your own.

Search results for query: Picaxe installation | PICAXE Forum

              Good luck……….

                Thanks, Bear

I had already been looking on the PicAxe forum, and getting nowhere, before I posted here

… and didn’t do much better when I tried again

So I continued to install the few optional updates which Micro$oft would download, including the upgrade of .Net from 3.5.1 to 4.8

It said this had been installed successfully but [surprise, surprise] the list of installed ‘Windows features’ still lists 3.5.1 and there is no sign of 4.8

…. Took a deep breath and engaged ‘infinite number of monkeys’ mode: I turned the little group of .Net features on and off in all permutations, and finally settled for all off.

Ran the installer again, and this time it worked [various expletives deleted]

I wasn’t taking notes but, I think it comes down to:

                1. ignore the fact that the installer says it needs .Net 3.5.1
                2. take it on trust that .Net 4.8 is ‘backward compatible’
                3. install the update to .Net [with no idea of where it might reside]
                4. deselect .Net 3.5.1 as a Windows feature
                5. run the installer [expecting it to fail]
                6. heave big sigh of relief when it works

This all seems utterly bonkers to me

The screen of the NetBook is really too small for the software to display conveniently … but at least it seems to work.

I will be back if it all goes horribly wrong !!

                MichaelG.

                .

Edit: __ sorry, had to correct step 4

All three boxes for the [now non-existent] .Net 3.5.1 are ticked.

Hi MichaelG, firstly I don't have PicAxe, but I do have an old favourite scanning and editing programme which was for Windows 3.1 / 95 / NT, while it worked just as well on Windows 98 and 98 2nd edition, it would also work on Windows 2000, but would freeze after a while when using it. It will also work on Vista reasonably well, though it's fussy which scanner I use it on, and it does work really well on Windows XP with all scanners that I've had, but the only laptop I have with XP on is a Toshiba N100 notebook, which only has a screen size of 8.9 inch's, which makes it hard to see if drawings and text are square to the page. Luckily it has an output for an external monitor, which overcomes the problem of lining up the small scanned page correctly, as very often printed stuff isn't very square to the paper it's printed on. A couple of photos below show the difference, one of the pre-scan and one of a zoomed in area to check the lining up.

                  pre-scan#2.jpg

The External monitor is a spare 20 inch one that I have.

                  Regards Nick.

Thanks, Nick … Yes, the little Samsung NetBook [whose screen  is only 1024×600] also has a VGA port, so it’s no great problem.

I’ve just got spoiled using the iPad with its high-resolution screen.

                    MichaelG.
