I have a stone dead readout console for Sino glass scales on my hands. Before junking it I thought I'd open it up to see if there was anything obvious I could do – I have near zero practical electronics knowledge, so it would have to be something very obvious! Luckily it might be – the PSU is dead, 240V on the input 0.0000V (so not floating) on the output. I've tried searching on the ID on the case for a direct replacement, but no joy. Can any of the electronic wizards amongst you suggest how I might get this going again?

      Robin.

Looks like a pretty generic power supply unit. Try e.g. the 5V 10A version here and if the dimensions match you should be good to go. Just the first seller I found on ebay, plenty more around…(edit) or for lots more money, a very close match to the original: here.

I would try checking for dry joints on the power supply. These are usually assembled by flow soldering and the temperature is a compromise between small and large components. You can spot a dry joint by the Matt grey color and often a gap around the joint. There may be a fuse on the board as well.

Hi have you considered a power supply from a old desktop computer please check first but I believe these give out both 12 vdc and 5 vdc just check on the amps that you require.

The fuses aren't intended to be replaced – they are just to prevent fire or shock if / when the special smoke comes out. Generally, if a fuse has blown, the PSU is almost certainly dead and best just to replace it. TDK Lambda is a good brand so presumably you (or somebody else) have had your money's worth out of it.

As Pete says, almost any 5V PSU will do. Ideally it would be CE marked (like the original).

Wow, thanks Bikepete – I had no idea it was that cheap and simple embarrassed. I'm not too worried if it's not an exact dimensional fit – I can stick it in an external box and run wires if push comes to shove I guess.

Thanks for your suggestion David, but at 10 quid for replacement it's probably not worth trying to resuscitate the old PSU.

This unit failed under warranty and was duly replaced, but despite my repeated requests to the supplier to arrange return it's been taking up shelf space for over a year, so I guess it's mine now to do with what I will.

                  Robin.

If you see one with a green or blue fibreglass PCB I suspect you will be getting a more reliable part. The one you have and all of the ones I can see on ebay appear to be using a rather cheap and nasty type that is well known for producing dry joints. It's looks like hand soldering too – from the appearance of the parts that can be seen.

Thanks again Pete – I'm hoping you edited whilst I was replying, otherwise I failed to read your post properly. Your second link looks like a direct replacement, but at 35 quid and 16 postage I'll try the generic solution first.

                      Robin.

Take the cover off the PSU and check the electrolytic capacators, if the top is split or even just bulged it's probably toast.

I just repaired a dead SINO DRO with £0.85 worth of replacement capacators from Maplin

                        Regards,

                        Nick

Allendale Electronics /Machine DRO can supply replacement PSUs for the SINO DRO units

Thanks Nick – I've emailed them. I got a ten quid unit off eBay, which has satisfied me that the rest of the DRO is OK, but it can't be crammed into the enclosure. It would be nicer to get a direct replacement if the price is right. I'm hoping that they can also supply compatible rails.

The CE mark on the eBay offering looked different from what I'm used to – a bit of research suggests that there's stuff coming out of China with a slightly different marking, intended to deceive. Doesn't worry me too much, so far as I can gather the CE mark means little, if anything at all, anyway.

                              This page is quite informative.
