So here is a part a friend wants making to prototype some sort of coffee filter

Heres what came out of the printer

The entire inside cone has become solid, 3 holes on the bottom flange have also been filled in.

      Back to the I file

Anyone know whats going on with this?

Cura is compatible with a number of printers; it's free, so worth trying.

Will it make a tapered washer without filling in the hole?

Mess about with the software a bit

And find the forums for your machine/software, lots of answers in those places

I'm very much a beginner with 3D printing, but one immediate thought is that the edges of the object may not be completely joined, so that your stl isn't a closed solid. I assume that a slicer would not regard overlapping edges or two or more vertices representing one point on the model as defining a solid object in much the same was as a failed 3D render.

Most odd that the preview seems to show it hollow. And if you'd added supports, they'd be on the outside of the cup, not the inside. Somehow the model has become solid, albeit with the default (20%?) fill.

I doubt you'd need to change slicer to fix this – presumably it's not a bug, so must be some configurable setting. If you are really stuck, the slicer support forum may be more useful than this one. I've only used Cura.

It means that the top surface is zero thickness. Odds are it's a problem with the model not the slicer.

One way of doing this is to subtract an object from another when they share a plane face – always more reliable to have the object clearly proud of the face so it has to penetrate it.

Another route is moving nodes on a 3D object and 'bending' a plane surface.

                      Sometimes it just happens…

It could be your slicer but, try loading the file into the freely distributable and downloadable legacy version of NetFabb available from GitHub, it has great mesh check and repair options.

Just watched a youtube video explaining some of the mesh settings in cura and by clicking on one little box (fill all holes ) the holes that were designed into the part being printed dissapeared .

Maybe something similar to what the OP is having trouble with ?
