          Hi Thomas,

Looks good so far, are you going to make the holder for sharpening HSS lathe tools, sharpening end mills etc.?

I plan on making all the accessories and see which I prefer to do on this compared to my Gorton 375.

              Nice!

The blue piece looks if it might work in a Wallace & Grommet sketch.

Its very sophisticated, I won't be showing anyone pics of my effort now! crying I tried going to the next page and there was a video of a car being turned round on a road, see what you think of it.

                    Thomas.

                    Looking good.

I made the simple grinding rest and wished I'd made the advanced one.

I'm sure you will get a many hours of use from it. I made the Mill end and side holder which I've used a few times to hold round things on my mill but not yet sharpened an end mill on it. I have a problem with the height.

I do have the stops. Incidentally if you make it you might find the measurements for the drawbar are to long.

Thank you for commenting. I ordered some stock material closer in size to the knobs, screws to save on lathe time. I am on hold until that arrives.

I have almost finished making the MK2 version and not yet found any obvious drawing errors, so you can proceed with confidence that there won't be any scrappers as a result. Only maker malfunction! I admit to cocking up a couple of parts from which I learned, older n wiser! One example being the Swivel Base 31, I put the 4 – off, M3 tapped (blind) holes in the wrong edge, next to the M6! "Sod it, not scrapping, I'll tap other side as well!" Not happy with my blunder, particularly as M3 so small there's a risk of tap breakage, especially a blind hole. Didn't break a tap, thank goodness. Something I've noticed is that HH has arranged things that only just work, e.g., thicknesses of metal to be threaded. The tap required is just long enough to do the needful. Wish some of the past locomotive designers could have matched Harold's skill. I basically want repeatability in grinding lathe tools and endmill sharpening but I'm looking for a simpler way of holding endmills as I don't want so much extra work like what's involved with his design. My sadly missed pal once said you can spend half your life making tools to make more tools and not get on with what you really want to make.

MK2 version of what? Is there a second version of the advanced Grinding Rest?

                            MK2 = "Advanced Version"

Ahh makes sense. And your quote on making tools to make tools and never get on with making the thing you wanted is the story of my maker career so far. Lol

I think I am a bit confused on assembly of the top half of the grinding rest. How do parts 9 connect together? Leadscrew but 15 doesn't go far enough into the lower 9? Are they screwed together or does the top half simply rest on the lower slide? So close, but I'm stumped.

From looking at the drawings, it looks like the 'stem' of upper nut 5 fits into the 6mm counterbore in the top of lower nut 6 – lower nut 6 is secured in lower 9 by a grubscrew.

I guess this is to allow some 'float' in nut 5 to stop it binding on it's leadscrew. The dovetails should prevent upper part 9 from lifting, and the screw will prevent it falling out of the ends?

Tho' I could be wrong, in which case hoprefully someone will give you the right answer…

I noticed my error, I mistakenly read 6mm as 9mm. Now that it is sorted it all goes together well. I need to lap my dovetails for a bit to get them smoother.
