20200508_133033.jpgHi, This is the first time I have posted any of my items, so here goes, just completed hand turning rest for my Myford 254, the Hemmingway kit was to small so I had a go at producing my own.

Body is from scrap alloy wheels, foot casting ZL12 Zinc alloy, melted in a Myfordboy clone furnace.

Sorry about the photos I realise now that they should be landscape.

Measurements taken from G H Thomas Model Engineers Workshop Manual.

      Regards Richard

      Mod edit: pic rotated.

Looks like a nice piece of kit you've made Richard. Which tools do you play using when hand turning?

I do have one round nosed tool but mostly I just use a conventional graver shape. I use it all the time for putting tiny chamfers on parts or rounding turned corners. It's just one of those bits of kit that once you have one you wouldn't be without.

Nice work Ritchard. Have you thought of a centre hight setting collar to sit on the stem once you have made some turning tools?

            regards Matin

Hi Mark, I have yet to make the Graver described in the George Thomas book, he uses a 3/16" sq tool steel set in a holder with wooden handle, so I used a wood turning scraper on this De Winton Loco chimney to try it out.

Hi Martin, Hadn't thought of a collar, what a good idea! will add it to the never ending to do list.

Nice work Richard. Do you want to sell off your Hemmingway kit? I was thinking about doing a rest as well.

The only thing with fitting a collar is that you are stuck with one size/ dia of graver, I use several sizes and don’t find height setting an issue as you only have to raise or lower the handle a smigin to find the sweet spot which I find is different for different materials. Nice job though and nice to see someone using them!

I just had an epiphany and decided to just stick a 1/2" bar in a boring bar holder. Seems to work ok!

                        rest
