Thanks to the help and advice I get off here the vice is finally completed. The only thing I didn't make is the button cap screw, everything else on the clamp and vice is mine apart from the design (copied from existing vice).

It's lovely! A work of art as well a very functional and practical tool.

            Nice work !

Whats the fly you have there ?

I never progressed into fly fishing – too busy flicking lures around , i used to build my own rods on a home made rod lathe but these days it is not worth it .

The fly is a Classic Salmon fly the name of which escapes me, I'll have to check my books.

A good looking vice you have made. Vices have come on a long way since my flying days.

Nice job Paul. There are some very interesting looking Fly Tying vices out there, I particularly like the one I saw that used Damascus steel in its manufacture. I have thought of making one myself a couple of times but I don’t Fly fish!

                      Lovely looking vice and fly!

The design looks simular to a LAW vice.

It is copied from a LAW vice, sold my LAW a couple of years ago and regretted it. I've also got a LAW anti reverse reel, I need some more skills before trying one of those though.

Depends on club rules/local bylaws but generally yes they are. I tie these for display or as tying excercise rather than to fish with.

Legal in the UK, although not good practice for catch and release and some waters have bans on them.

When I used to fish many years ago the local tackle shop had a shark hook about three inches long on display and I would have loved to have seen that made up with some feathers! Purely as a decorative item of course, nicely mounted and framed.

O1 tool steel, hardened, tempered then cold blued.

Not at the moment, I had an original vice to work from.

A lot of lure anglers that fish the top end of Australia crimp the barbs down as it makes release easier but more importantly it makes getting a hook out of your hand easier ! Barramundi have a nasty habit of going bezerk just when you are trying to unhook them and an even more uncanny ability of connecting the angler to the same lure that is still hooked to them !

Well Vic, here is one on a shark hook originally tied by my Wife some 30+ year ago as a joke for a keeper pal from down country, an ardent fly fisher, who came to fish our river but it was in flood – some 10ft above normal so he was presented with said fly as an example of what locals used "in heavy water " The hook is approx 18in long and 6in gape
