I have started the model lathe which my wife bought me for Christmas. Its the first thing which isn't to do with tooling or parts for my lathe etc since retiring and my first model. The first few castings started.

Hi David; from the drawings I am assuming it's a Stuarts kit. looking at seeing the final built, do you plan to motorise it?

Hi I hope to motorise it is am looking how I can make an electic motors look old style enough and what belt to use strong enough but small enough to drive it and to cut metal.

The T slots on the cross slide are shown just as slots. I found if you take a piercing saw to them with the cross slide held on the vice you can cut reasonable representations of the _ bit of the T slot. The saw will only really cut on the outside of the piece but that's the only bit you can see. I didn't like the big hex nuts on the end of the spindle either so did some with slots on a 8 point PCD a la crescent wrench style and they are better but still a little chunky. Sometime I may get round to making some more with holes instead of slots. It's an attractive little model. A brass makers plate would look good too after you got rid of the STUART on the casting.

For strong belts, the ones I use for driving things from my Stirling Engines is 3 mm round, heat joined plastic belting. I use 5 mm dia of the same stuff to drive a Super Adept lathe.

I have tried to fit ball bearings into the headstock so I can run it at a higher speed, two in the front bearing and one in the rear. When I have made the spindle I shall see if it works.

Hi David, I obtained a set of castings when Stuart first produced them many

years ago. I think the most difficult part to make is the 4 jaw chuck.

Next stage finished on Lathe. Headstock finished and chuck fitted to tailstock. All looks ok at the moment.

Could you post future pictures with a ruler in the foreground so I/we can get an idea of the size.

Great work David!

Too few are making models of machine tools IMHO.

The tailstock chuck you attached looked out of proportions though.

But I have a tip for you; I bought a miniature chuck from Banggood, that may be more appropriate in size. I thought I would show the size of of the one I bought, by taking a picture in my hand, but I can't locate it at the moment (too small maybe? )

It has a JT0 taper, but comes with a tapered adaptor if you need. Dimensions is ø 21.5mm x l 35mm

Hi David,

I think Thomas has a point, the chuck does look a bit on the large side.

I have just bought a mini chuck from Arc euro trade 4mm capacity and jto taper, it's a good chuck.

I agree with you that the chuck is a bit large, but it is the smallest that I can find at 21mm dia by 28 long 4mm drill .

Aah, that's the same size as the one I linked to. I don't think you can buy any smaller than that.

That means that you have to make your own tailstock chuck from scratch too!

You could use the adjustable chuck from Dremel(or similar sized tool). i have a Jacobs Chuck that opens to 3/16".

It does look nice and I hate to say but, but ,

Stuart Turner state that

The Stuart Engineering Lathe has been carefully designed by taking the most interesting elements from lathes in use at the end of the 19th century and combining them to produce an attractive model.

and . . .

The Jacobs Chuck was first Patented in 1902.

Personally I think it would look better with taper drills.

However it is your model and I say this only for information and not at all from a sense of criticism.
