Hi all, I am part way through building a GLR vertical boiler and am thinking ahead to what route to take for a feed pump, there is nothing in the boiler build instructions, they seem to assume that the builder would know about such things. I am a complete novice when it comes to boilers so still getting to grips with the various gauges, valves etc (I have the GLR set ready to fit) Are there ready made pumps or preferably designs available to make my own.

I have just ordered castings for a 6″ scale Ruston & Proctor traction engine which includes a steam operated Weir pump.

There are many also other suppliers for steam parts. Do a Google search.

With a small vertical boiler like that you would be better off using a small hand opperated pump, I’m sure there are designs about can’t think of one online at the moment but Bruce sell ready made as shown on the bottom of page 45 in their catalogue

GLR also do them so should be able to advise on the size required

Ha! some replies. Thanks for that, in meantime I ordered a weir pump ‘castings on a stick’ from GLR. Could be a long time before I get round to finishing it but I like to have a few things on the go at once. Currently Jan Ridders simple 2 stroke engine-finished apart from deciding on ignition, GLR vertical boiler-just done my first silver soldering, quite pleased but pressure test will tell, Stuart 10V-not started yet and now the pump.

On the subject of silver soldering what is the relationship between joint size/type and solder wire diameter (I assume there is one)

I am afraid the relationship is experience, but a basic rule of thumb is big joint larger solder size. it is often easier to control the flow of silver solder if you keep the size of the silver solder to 1.5 or 2.0 mm it is expensive stuff, remember more solder does not mean a stronger joint, a good mechanical fit will increase the strength of the joint. If the item being soldered is very small then silver solder wire is best. Silver soldering is like any of the other skills we use, practice will improve it.

Depends a bit on what you are making, but the .8mm wire is very good for general purpose pipework, rod fork ends etc. Some alloys are better at fillet forming, so its a good move to have a couple of alloys available, plus some higher temp stuff so you can step in sequence without melting work already done.

If you look in the mag at the various free train plans, you will find a few examples of small hand pumps fitted to tenders.

Take one of these, replace the bottom input with a pipe fitting from your water supply, and add a base to the mounting points. Mine looks a little untidy, and as my first effort at this type of valve does not push much pressure, but seems to work. (haven’t fitted to the boiler yet, so am sure Murphy will get in the way)
