Is the Model Engineers Handbook No 3 by Tubal Cain worth getting, I have only just come across it.

Just wondered what people think of how useful it is and its content.

Recommended. It's a first class selection of techy info specifically aimed at Model Engineers. As such it's much less comprehensive than Machinery's Handbook, but it delivers most of what we need in a slim handy volume. Covers things like model gauge wheel flanges that Machinery's doesn't have as well.

Thanks guys I have just ordered a copy.

I have other books but not of them have model related information so it will be useful.

Yes – it's a valuable reference work. In fact I was using my copy only yesterday!

I also have George Thomas' The Model Engineer's Workshop Manual. (TEE Publishing)

The two books overlap to some extent, but the latter is aligned more to machining techniques, with a lot of drawings of accessories to make.

Another valuable reference work is Harold Hall's Metalworker's Data Book, no 42 in the WPS series and based on the data sheets from MEW which Neil has said will be reissued.

Tubal Cain's book is an excellent reference book. (When I thought that mine was lost, I bought another copy! )

One of the first that I go to for information.

+1 for Tubal Cain's book. In fact anything by him (the real Tubal Cain aka T D Walshaw), or George Thomas….

I have two copies of Tubal Cain's handbook, one in the workshop and the other in the office. It is the go to book for simple, good, general information. Don't expect too much from Section Nine "Air and Gas". It could do with a major edit to include electronics, CAD/CAM and other recent advances.

He wrote some other excellent books in the Nexus Special Interests range. I think his "Hardening, Temperering and Heat Treatment" is particularly good.

He is an American retired metalworking teacher. I think his later videos dropped the Tubal Cain name after complaints. Whilst the name is Biblical, Tom Walshaw used it for 50 years and although it was disrespectful of Tom, I don´t think he was aware of him.

Tubal-cain is named in the Old Testament as being the first blacksmith. Much symbolism has attached to him over the centuries, including a link to Freemasonry, who have long been suspected by conspiracy theorists of being a secret society.

First used as a pen-name by T.D.Walshaw, one of the best Model Engineering writers ever, who died in 1998. More recently adopted on Youtube mrpete222 by Lyle Peterson, also worth watching.

"Tubal Cain" was an articifer in metals. Worked on construction of the Temple in Jerusalem.

According to Masonic lore, was assassinated.

I use tubal as an eMail name firstly in recognition of a person I admired as an engineer and also because it anonimises me to some extent. Tubal had a brother called Jubal who was in charge if the music. So maybe toiling away in the workshop should be called tubilation as opposed to jubilation.

I think Baz's definition is closer as many of the activities are well publicised and their charitable work, though not shouted about runs into millions – but within all of that there are some things that are private to members of the organisation, so a society with secrets makes sense to me

                                                    .
