      Hi,
      can anyone point me at a set of plans that reasonably caputes the fittings I need for a 3″ vertical boiler. I plan on making the fittings rater than buying. I have bought samples of nuts and tails but not the more expensive ones.
       
      From a copy of the magazine i pick up off the stand it looks like the Shand fire engine is on the right track; but my new subscription wont catch the relevant aticles. (would need to know the relevant back issues)
       
      also, as a first time boiler, I have a few doubts (under steam pressure) about a valve rather than a ‘tap’ design for the various valves.

          The valve should be designed so the steam pressure holds the spindle down onto its seat in much the way that a stopcock in your house is directional so the water pressure will hold it shut rather than trying to lift the washer off its seat.

            The valve design I have concerns about has a tapered seat with a cross hole, this design is in the Shand Fire Engine to close the drain cock on the water tube so would need to hold steam pressure. Other valves seem to be a needle into a tapered hole. Niether design fits your rather logical description.

              This is the typical type of valve used for drain cocks, there are thousands in use, so long as you make the tapered reamer at the same topslide setting as the spindle you should not go far wrong
