Can anyone recommend a suitable boiler for a Stuart 10v? I am looking to either build one from scratch or a kit as a learning execise before moving on to other larger projects so do not want to just buy one.

Also does anyone know of a source of plans for a simple displacement lubricator that would suit the above engine?

        Thanks,

I have just recently found a site that sells ready made boilers in various sizes for static engines, horizontal & vertical boilers that is, and they can be bought either fully furnished with fittings or as a basic boiler. The web site is http://www.maccsteam.com/index.html and as far as I can see they are super units at a reasonable price.

          Hope this helps, best regards.

There is a plan for a simple Displacement lubricator here or here.  These are both for model locos of about 0 gauge and would be right for the 10V.  You can use these as the basis for designs and change details as you wish.

There is also the plans for a simple boiler on the latter   site which is Dave Watkins live steam site which could form the basis for a simple vertical pot boiler with ‘hedgehog’ spikes to increase the heating area.  Look at the ‘Idris’ plans here which are basic designs.  This would not give a long steaming time but should give adequate pressure for a small engine and could be modified simply.

Stan Bray’s book ‘Making Model Steam Engines’ has designs for several boilers plus a design for a simple but effective pressure pump for testing, with instructions on how to test a boiler.  This is available from most libraries.

Also Tubal Cain’s model steam engine books 1 and 2  contain instructions and designs for boilers.  These can all be modified to make them somewhat larger to increase the amount of steam to fire for a longer period and are all relatively simple to build and will provide you with the experience you need.

By the way, invest in a good torch, most difficulties with boiler making is in the silver soldering and most problems with that is not enough heat.  Many recommend the Sievert propane kits such as this one (cheapest I’ve seen so far).

Others may have different views though.

            Best of luck

GLR do some vertical boiler kits in various stages from just raw materials to ones with flanged plates etc.

                BTW,

Both Stan Bray and Dave Watkin’s Idris plans have drawings for boiler fittings which would give you real experience in machine work.  Dave uses imperial screw threads, but there is no reason, as he suggests that you could not use metric.  Also see his construction notes, they’re full of good tips.

Also, Macc models has some of the best prices for materials (no connection just a very satisfied customer ).

                Regards

thanks for the information, the GLR kits seem about right for my requirements, not sure if I will get flanged plates or not, the actual flanging does not worry me, more that I end up with formers I have no use for. Has anyone built one of these boilers, if so what do they think of the kit.

The Idris lubricator looks like what I need.
