I’m afraid that I can only offer a little background confusion to
          this…

The firm that had the most to do with
the Styal Quarry Bank Mill initially was Boulton and Watt, but they
didn’t make small engines, so I don’t think it’s theirs. What little I
know about this seems to indicate that the example in the workshop may
not be original at all. When the original mill engine was completely
rebuilt, the workshop was intended to be driven by a small 20HP
double-vortex turbine – which that engine surely isn’t! The firm that
got the rebuild job was Gilbert, Gilkes & Gordon Ltd, (originally
Williamsons) and all this work was supposed to take place between 1904
and 1905, when they replaced the original Boulton and Watt machinery
which had reached the end of its working life.

          Strikes
me that the turbine probably didn’t ‘look the part’ for the museum, and
so what’s presented there now as perhaps genuine in the historical
context probably isn’t. Nice engine, but unless somebody recognises it
specifically, the only real recourse is to ring the museum, and see if
anybody’s prepared to divulge what actually happened…

            Hi Steve

Thanks for your reply, I don’t think the engine has any association with the mill, its just part the general industrial exhibits.

            Cheers

That’s a very unusual design of slide bar. I don’t think I’ve ever seen slide bars beyond the crankshaft. I wonder why?

                Hi

John I found out a little about this type of engine from another Forum I post to apparently the type was very common   in Navel ship because of its compactness and was called a return crank.

This link has some useful information on the type

A full size example of the Naval version is at the US Merchant Marine Academy.

                Regards

I visited Styal in 1984(last visit to UK), most impressed, as now I look after a vintage turbine here in NZ.According to the info I got then the water turbine was installedin 1903 to replace the100hp water wheelthat had been installed in 1819. The turbine was in use untilthe mill ceased production in1959.The large turbine has been carefully dismantled and will be put on display(quote from a visitors guide). I don’t remember the steam engine, it may not have been there in 1984. Knowing museums of this type it could have come from else where. Ian S C

                    Hi Ian

They do have the turbine on show close to where this Return Crank Engine is on display they have quite a nice display of other engine type that were used as primary power in cotton mills. Its a must visit place for anyone who his interested in UK Industrial history.

                    Cheers

I see there is a large unidentified horizontal steam engine that came from a dye works. Ian S C
