I’m afraid that I can only offer a little background confusion to
this…
The firm that had the most to do with
the Styal Quarry Bank Mill initially was Boulton and Watt, but they
didn’t make small engines, so I don’t think it’s theirs. What little I
know about this seems to indicate that the example in the workshop may
not be original at all. When the original mill engine was completely
rebuilt, the workshop was intended to be driven by a small 20HP
double-vortex turbine – which that engine surely isn’t! The firm that
got the rebuild job was Gilbert, Gilkes & Gordon Ltd, (originally
Williamsons) and all this work was supposed to take place between 1904
and 1905, when they replaced the original Boulton and Watt machinery
which had reached the end of its working life.
Strikes
me that the turbine probably didn’t ‘look the part’ for the museum, and
so what’s presented there now as perhaps genuine in the historical
context probably isn’t. Nice engine, but unless somebody recognises it
specifically, the only real recourse is to ring the museum, and see if
anybody’s prepared to divulge what actually happened…
