I picked up a reasonable set of mini-'mole' grips at lidl the other day, normal, long nose and one with the 'square' jaws for reaching around a flange. The latter works really well for clamping the drill vice to the table and more flexible than my usual big bolt.

Also, mini-humidifiers (proper refrigerating ones) that might suit a small and slightly damp workshop.

You probably want a D-humidifier rather than a humidifier in the workshop.

I've found the D ones best, the C humidifiers are too small and the E humidifiers are too big. (sorry) JD

Neil, don't waste your money, just throw a bucket of salty water all over the workshop. It will do the same job at a fraction of the cost teeth 2

I bought the mini mole grips last week. I am very pleased with the quality of the grips. How can they make three pairs of grips for £4?

And no real reason to use decent steel, just use what melted steel that leaks out and puddles up on the floor.

You will almost certainly find that those 'Mole' grips will break at the pivot point if you ask them to do more than what a decent pair of tweezers would do !

If you keep the receipt you will have at least a 12 month and often a 3 year guarantee with any tools from places like Lidl and Aldi

If it breaks you take it back in when you buy a pint of milk and they hand you your dosh back, no quibbles

Their entry level stuff can be good for newbies, I never dreamed of being able to weld, ever, but 40 quid for a box and a 5 quid pack of rods introduced me to gluing metal together

They had sets of ring and open spanners last week, a fiver for each, so a tenner for a full set of ring and open spanners

A packet of fags costs a tenner nowadays

The only thing I ever found really useless was their drill grinder, for a fiver, but I still wound up with two fine stone cup grinders for a fiver so didn't bother taking it back

Got the angle grinder and a couple of packs of disks for 27 bananas today

I already had the grinder stand from last year so I put it all together and chopped some metal up in moments which made a nice change from the usual tedium of hacksaw work

If I blow it up in the next 3 years I'll take it back and get my money back

The quality for a mere 20quid is pretty impressive(so far…)

They are doing an impact wrench for £30 on Easter Monday.

Very handy for anyone contemplating a power drawbar for a mill.

Most of the kits are air powered and having to run a compressor for the odd one off tool change is noisy and wasteful.

For £30 you can't go wrong

I see they also have a scroll saw offer. It looks like many rebadged generic types. Anyone know if they are decent enough to use for non-ferrous sheet?

Boughr a numberof tools from Lidle over the years. All ok if you do not push them too hard. Best buys have been chain saw sharpener £30 and 60 ltr vaccum cleaner with integral power socket for power tools. Never bought spanners due to earlier mishap with a cheap one only buy top quality ones now.

I've purchased quite a few small tools and other sundries at Lidl since they opened a store locally. Most have been fine for the price and the occasional use most will probably see. Their boxes of assorted screws, nuts, bolts, washers, heat shrink (etc etc) are very good value and always come in handy. This week a box of 12 tubes of acrylic paint (for £1.99) caught my eye and I'm sure will get used for some of my modelling.

However, their bench drill also looked tempting (for the £50 price) so was an impromptu purchase. On arriving home it was assembled and briefly run (I didn't get as far as actually drilling anything). The noise was awful and the quill slop didn't even meet my usually forgiving (e.g. fairly low) standards. The general build quality of the parts was very poor. It was quickly re-packed and taken back. A refund was given – not without question – they asked why I was returning it and I simply told them that on reflection, it didn't meet my needs. The Manager shrugged, his biggest problem seeming to be that my reason wasn't on his returns form.

Afterwards, I decided my (old) 1/4" drill was a better bet for my indoor workshop needs and I'd be better off spending my time improving that than wasting it trying to sort out a basically crappy one. Of course, I haven't actually got a round Tu-It yet (one reason I purchased the cheap drill)

So whilst I've generally good things to say about Lidl, not everything they offer is always good – even for occasional use……

                                                    Regards,
