Like I suspect many others, my eyesight has got worse as I have got older.

Being shortsighted that had meant that I needed glasses for distance but that distance has got shorter over the years and I now need varifocals so I could see shorter distances as well.

The problem I had found was that no spectacle could allow me to focus on something REALLY close (say 4-6"and to cope I would have to take my glasses off as I can see that close better unaided. It was a real chore to keep taking them on and off and just lifting to my forehead often caused them to drop back at a critical moment.

There used to be a type of spectacle called a "half eye" where the bottom was a lens but the top was empty. I asked my optician whether a reverse of such a thing was available but was told not.

On clearing a cupboard I found a old pair of glasses and decided rather than give to charity I would try and convert to my reverse half eye.

I wear a rimless plastic lens pair so it wasn't too hard to remove the lenses and grind them to the shape I wanted.

I have lost the medium (3' or so) distance but the long distance is fine and now I can see close up with no problem at all.

That was Dennis Taylor who wanted the optical centre to be right at the top of the lens. When he was sighting and bending down he was looking through where the frame would normally be so they made him special glasses where the lens projected up higher. Similar problem but from the opposite direction.

That's a clever solution David, I use something similar to this. Just lift them up when I don't need them and mine doesn't drop down easily.

I think I remember Dennis Taylor saying the first time they tried it they made everything look bigger. The adjusted them and everything looked the right size. Dennes then said could the make them so the balls looked smaller and the looked pockets bigger !

(At my career interview I was told that looking at people over the top of my glasses may not be a good idea in interviews).

                        .

                        Neil,

Similar to you [I think] … I have been myopic since my teens, and used to take advantage of that by just removing my glasses for close work; giving me a far point of about 3 feet and a near point of about 3 inches. … Very convenient.

With increasing age came loss of accommodation, and I found myself peering over the top of my glasses to do close work. But, no, I don't try to adjust focus by changing the distance between spectacle lens and eye. Accommodation is now so poor that there is no 'overlap' and I have to pre-select glasses [or none] to suit different [and quite shallow] zones of focus. … Choose the zone; and then position eiher my head or the work, to suit.

                        MichaelG.

                        .

                        P.S. I don't want bi-focals, or vari-focals.

When I was still working for fine surgery (such as eyes) I bought a magnifying loupe. far from cheap with in-built illumination etc. They came with the option of prescription lenses but at that price if I'd gone that route then oter staff couldn't have used them. As my eyes got worse i had the local optician make up a simple pair of glasses for me.. the varifocal prescription I have with a flip-down second set of lenses to increase the magnification when needed. They work almost as well as the loupe,,cost about half and are actually lighter to wear (and eligible as a business expense)

The only thing to note is that suddenly adding high mag means that your distance judgment has to get used to that… don't go waving sharp stuff about until you've got the hang of it and your focal distanceis shortened a lot so you have to get used to keeping 'in range'

David I wear what are called bifocles that is they have a smaller lens built in at the lower third (or there abouts) of the lens. It's a job for an optician though because the extra lens has to be placed out of your normal line of sight. Mine are a god send as it saves changing specs all the time.

I started with just reading specs and due to people calling me down to the shop floor I got lazy and left the specs on which in the long run weakened my sight and necessetated the use of bifocles. The heavy lens is for reading and the other for crashing the car and walking into lamp posts!!! I really must get to the opticians.

PS: I don't get on with those varifocal jobbies, they make me feel queasy.

                              Jesse.

i am also shortsighted, and spend most of my time in the workshop with my glasses on my forehead. a slight raising of my eyebrows makes them fall down to the proper level for longer distances!

Hi Julian, I tend to work in the opposite direction and slide my glasses down my nose so I can peak over the frame for close-up work and raise my head for more distance.

I tried vari-focals but they just gave me motion sickness and streaming eyes after about 20 minutes, Would like to try again and persevere with them though, or something similar.

                                      Hi David,

I have the opposite problem, need glasses to see up close and had a pair of specs made with a clear top. The problem I see with with your solution of cutting off the bottom to see things up close is that you no longer have your eyes completely protected if you are operating a machine.

                                      Paul.

That is true and I had thought about it. Being plastic I had always used ordinary specs as eye protection but won't be able to do that now. Have to wear goggles or similar now I guess.

And re Julian's comment of raising eyebrows to drop them back, that was the very reason I reduced the kens depth as for me they always dropped when I didn't want them to!

I use a pair of magnifying flip-ups on my regular specs. These are sold to anglers for tying knots at the waterside, and are available in x2, x2.5, and x3 strengths. Available at **LINK** . Our apprentice supervisor wore thick -lensed specs , he also had a pocket full of other glasses. When doing different jobs he just put on another pair, on top of whatever he already had on. Never did figure out what combination he had, or if it worked. Nobody dare ask him of course. It must have been a bit like the modern flip-ups. My biggest problem is keeping them clean.

You can get clip-ons that go on the top of specs. I bought these many years ago when I had trouble looking upwards to paint e.g. soffit boards on my house, and I couldn't see upwards properly as to what I was doing. They can be very handy. I think my optician supplied them.
