I want to reduce the diameter of a steel bar 28mm dia down to 22mm dia. for a distance of 100mm at both ends. The rod is 650 long , my lathe is 400 between c/cs spindle bore 20mm. The only way I can think of is to make tool from heavy tube with a cutting tool at one end, carried in the 3 jaw, with the bar fixed to the cross slide at center hight. This is just a one off job, and does not need to be very accurate or concentric. Any better ideas, I'm sure there is but my brain is addled with the heat.

You could put a boring head in the headstock taper and use that rather than your homemade tool. The tool would be a bit long at 100mm but several light cuts should do it.

If you have any spare length on the bar then hold it in the 3jaw and support the far end beyond the carrage with a fixed steady then turn down from the chuck for 100mm, finally saw off the bit that was in the chuck

Maybe cut the back end off a suitable size holesaw to leave the correct diameter spigot, fix it into a guide sleeve able to run on the outside of the bar and mount sleeve'n saw assembly in the chuck. Peck your way through about 3 mm at a time with plenty of lubrication. I'd weld the saw back together afterwards!

Similar guided holesaw worked for me but my job was short enough that I didn't have to cut the back off. Finish was surpringly good too. Especially as I used an electric pistol drill to drive it.

Hi Gordon I would cut bar in half, fix in chuck and fixed steady turn down end. do likewise with other half .Centre drill each half and put in a pin to line it up .Weld or braze together Asyou said that it need not be accurate .Just a thought but I have no idea what you are going to use the bar for ,it may not work

              good luck Maurice.

You could always send it to me and I could machine it to size.devil

Thanks for the remarkably swift ideas. Just got in after filling my new shed with more junk/spares. Had just thought of over length bar as per Jason B as I was walking in. Like the hole saw idea, will try that if bar allows. Job is for the linkage pins on a tractor, I'm making a rear weight box and thought of putting the bottom link right thru' a disposable box and filling with concrete, to save time and money. Stupid me!! can weld a bit of pipe in the middle and make in 2 bits !! Can use longer pipe and 2 short pins. Why does brain sieze up ?
