Having a nightmare trying to source straight 0.8 dia wire. Either it is on backorder or the postage is double the component cost. If you could advise a reliable source gentlemen. I would be most grateful.

What material? If you want "piano wire" ie hard steel, a local hobby shop,( if there is one ), might stock it, esp. if they sell model aeroplane kits.

IIRC, 0.8 mm is a mig welding size. A length of that might be straightened by pulling a length of that with your full weight behind it.

If you have a pal with a mig welder he can pull the trigger and give you some for free

you'll need to straighten it yourself

Also depends on length and purpose. A 21g syringe needle is 0.83mm rustproof but hollow up to 38mm long.

S/s Kirschner wires available 0.8mm too (see ebay or a local vet that does real surgery)

Thanks you all . Just to reiterate, I need straight wire. – Straightening roll cut wire does not work in this instance

You could try M Machine in Darlington, they do mail order

The only straight material I could find in their catalogue was silver steel of 1/32 inch diameter which is only 0.006 mm below 0.8 mm. Piano wire is sold in i metre lengths but comes coiled. Not however available in SWG 21

They sell the silver steel in 13 inch lengths but it may be available elsewhere in a greater length, which might be more convenient for you.

If non ferrous try Albion metals or K and S stockist or try Eileens Emporium or Metalsmith, the latter may cut to size required.

over 0.5m has to go “parcel rate Sadly

Piano wire supplied in model shops was in 36" (914.4mm) lengths. This was before T'nternet and instant gratification (Pre Covid) killed most of them off.

                        Regards Ian.

PS. Bunging a few amps (Low Voltage) through a wire held in tension will "Set" it straight. Have been using Pirrana wire in a string tensioned frame for hot wire cutting Aero wings for years.

                          K and S metals

These supply model shops and I have got wire similar to what you want in the past. Look at the web site and find a local stockist.

What are you doing with it? Piano or music wire is not easy to work being hardened.

If you want anything that thin to arrive straight then don't be surprised when the packing cost if more than the few pence that the material costs, a Cardboard tube or length of batten to tape it to are going to cost the supplier

                              Thank you everyone.

Sorted by a very pleasant bunch of people at M-machine-metals. Went for the 1/32" S/S and postage was very reasonable.

                              Recommend the good service!
