My present project is the construction of the Vega Twin IC engine. The plan suggests using Free Cutting Stainless steel for valves etc. So excuse the daft question but does Drill Rod have the similar properties ?

I always make my valves from 303 Stainless, a lot nicer to machine and no risk of rusting.

Exhaust valves have a very hard life at elevated temperatures, drill rod is just a high carbon steel and will suffer from corrosion as an exhaust valve.

I think "drill rod" is agar the Americans call silver steel, free cutting stainless is in old money EN58AM or free cutting stainless iron, it's nice stuff to machine and much better than silver steel.
