I'm about to make a lot (96) pins for the 24 hour wheel of a master clock. They are 3/8" long with about 1/8" of 12ba thread on one end to screw into the wheel. I've got a lot of 1.6mm TIG filler rods 316 S29 stamped into them. It seems to machine OK, but feels a bit hard when I touch it with a file. Would I be better getting some mild steel TIG rods? I don't want to spoil my expensive 12ba die.

in operation they just operate a very lightly loaded lever, so I'm not worried about wear

316 stainless is fairly tough stuff and work hardens readily, so it will give your die a fairly hard time. Mild steel would be kinder and brass would be even more so.

Alternatively, could you Loctite the pins into a drilled hole? Much easier than 96 x 12 BA threads .

Thanks Clive, the holes already exist and I don't want to do more to the clock than necessary to preserve it's originality. I've ordered some brass, the whole lot was less than the cost of the die and not much more expensive than mild steel, so probably a god move.

If anyone wants 1.6mm SS I've got loads!
