I cant find any small hex fastenings locally (no surprise there) no BA at all and metric only down to M3. I will be needing various small hex fastenings for a build and although I did find suppliers on line I wondered if you guys can recommend a supplier with a good range.

      Thanks

      Ron

Polly do limited range of small hex metric fully machined machined which are typically 1 size down so M3 will have 4mm hex rather than 5.5mm.

Or you can go direct to who makes the ones that Polly sells and that is GHW in Germany which is what I do.

If you want BA then try EKP though it is usually only the screws that have small hex not the nuts

Ron maybe we need to clear up what you want do you want small BA or metric size threads or do you want BA or metric fastners with smaller than standard hex heads?

Jason, I would like to stick to metric as I have a good range of taps including small sizes should I need to fix into threaded parts, would prefer to go with the smaller heads if I can.

                  Hi Ron,

Try A2A4 fasteners in Shirley Southampton. They do some BA stuff.

If you want to go smaller in metric, http://www.prime-miniatures.co.uk go down to M0.6 (the even do acorn nuts in that size) and a matching 1mm AF spinner. No steel, but they do offer tin or nickel plated as well as plain brass.

Ron, I have used EKP Supplies a few times for small BA screws etc. Great service and have been very happy with them.

Ebays your best friend there about 20th the price of some listed above and dont have to leave the room.

Another consideration would Shallow Head Cap Head screws be ok down to M1.6

Jon, I would rather stay away from cap heads if I can, I know the engine is not scale but I think hex heads would look more in keeping with the type.

4mm A/F on M3 looks silly, I bought some and never used them. It it were a 5 BA bolt with a 6 BA head it would be 0.193 AF which is near enough 5mm. 5BA nut is 0.221" near enough the same as M3 which is 5.5mm

Suppose it depends on what you are modeling.

                                    2" whit nut is 1.38D

                                    Standard M3 nut is 1.83D

                                    6BA hex on 126" 5 BA thread is 1.54D

                                    5BA hex on 5BA thread is 1.75D

                                    4mm hex on M3 is 1.33D

I know which one is closersmile p

I've found EKP to be the most competitive for bulk BA screws on Ebay or off it.

Also if you are bothered about how your nuts look some of the cheap e-bay offerings are pressed whereas most of EKP's are fully machined which gives a nicer looking crisp nut with single chamfer.

This old engraving of an engine I'm modelling is interesting. In this and the other view the nuts are all well over twice the thread diameter, except the one on the back of the crankpin. Everything else looks correctly proportioned and accurately drawn. I'm using standard size BA nuts.

A question guys, am I more likely to find a better range of BA in the smaller sizes with the reduced heads than I will with metric. Also is it more of a problem finding reduced size nuts in either BA or metric, I have found the reduced screws with some suppliers but they dont list nuts..?

I've not seen reduced BA nuts only hex screws and as you are more than likely to be using studs and nuts on a model than bolts/hex screws that makes the metric option more attractive unless you want to make your own.

Also if using a bolt/hex screw with a nut on teh other side that won't look too good with different sizes either end.

The M3 – 4mm hex is the odd one where available sizes of stock don't ideally suit the look, about 4.5mm would be better for say a 1" thread at 1/8th scale.
