I have just been to the Auto Jumble at Newark Showground and came across this supplier of screws bolts nuts etc. I don't know if anyone knows of this company but the range of threads is amazing BSF, BSW, BSC, UNF, UNC, BA, METRIC, and METRIC FINE as well as many other nuts etc. Its well worth looking on the web site **LINK** I am not in anyway connected to them but any supplier information is well worth sharing.

I have only had two transactions with 'Polished Stainless' but both have been very satisfactory. I should really have put this post in the 'outstanding Service' thread as on both occasions dispatch was on the same day as my (midday) telephoned order.

I was looking for a mixture of SS BA screws to upgrade some photographic equipment and spent some time Googling and then even more time going through several suppliers website catalogues but none in my initial searches stocked all the screws I needed so it looked like I was going to have to buy from separate suppliers. I then found Polished Stainless who had all the sizes and lengths on my list.

This is not intended as an advert and I have no connection with the company. I know though that people on this forum use BA, BSF and other older fixings so its definitely worth considering. They are not fixing I normally use and this is the first time I've bought BSF and BA screws in about 30 years!

I've no idea where the relevance to Whistons come from. If I had to pick a supplier from the past my choice would be 'Bernard F Wade' , Anybody still got a catalogue? (its on orange paper)

Ah, Whistons. Sorely missed. I still have lots of the little bundles which were supplied wrapped in old newspaper…

The "assorted BA screws" still come in handy. There must have been a thousand in the bag. And the very odd sizes of silver steel wire and small rod. I could go on, but my specs are misting up with nostalgia…

                  Ian,

Given the history of the linked business [Surplus Supplies] …

We started in the 1980s attending car and motorbike shows and autojumbles, and have been buying up old stock since then.

… is the relevance to Whiston's not evident ?

P.S. [David] … Thanks for the link.

Why pick Whistons? I still dont see the connection and the sentence you highlighted probably applies to hundreds of businesses similar to Polished stainless. As fas as I know Mr Whiston probably started trading in the very early 50s and I recall that most of the items in the famous 'Cat' were acquired at government surplus sales after the war.

Bernard F Wade on the other hand almost exclusively sold fasteners the majority of which were from the aerospace industry. I have no idea when his business started and finished but my last catalogue is from the mid 70s.

By coincidence, today I installed a drawer under a workbench utilising a pair of 'Imslide' runners that I bought over the counter at Whistons in New Mills in about 1972. From memory they were about £1.50 each which was an absolute bargain as retail at the time they were probably about £15 retail.

I can't say for sure [as it was Graham that did the picking], but I presume it was just that Ken Whiston is a fond memory.

                      It's not really worth debating.

OK. Guilty as charged. I made the reference to K R Whistons…… i am not too sure why anyone is questioning why I did so, but in case anyone is mildly interested, it was because I looked at the Surplus Supplies website and saw reference to their "bargain packs" and "£1 packs" which reminded me of previous dealings (around 1974) with KRW who did similar bags of "leftovers" and sweepings…..

I will take 100 lines and go back to being a lurker – potentially safer!

Ian P, it was a good job you bought those runners, you just knew they would come in handy 45 years later, it just shows you should never throw anything away.

I bought one of the last Whiston's Metal Packs from, Proops, when I was starting out. Still have some of it left, some lovely machining hex bar. They made the 1kg up with TIG rods, and I've lost count of how many of these have been converted into car radio removal tools!
