Hello.

Does anyone have experience with getting valve gear and rods electroplated?

I have a 5" gauge locomotive with inside Stephenson's valve gear. The loco is about 20 or 30 years old and, despite running infrequently, is showing the usual wear and wear associated with running. Nothing is too sloppy, but would like to avoid wear in future and also assist with preventing things getting surface rust.

Considering getting valve gear and rods hard chromed – visually appealing, and affords a level of wear protection greater than that of steel.

Any thoughts and/or experience?

No experience on a Loco or model but I have had motorcycle cam followers hard chrome plated with good results.

There are lots of other surface treatments like Tufftride/Surfsulf coatings which come out black or grey. Or even a light nitride. Where are you ? I use a hard chrome place in Birmingham.

As Chris no experience on loco but had some fork legs for an old triumph ground back and chromed back to size again as Chris says where are you place in Sandbach and one in Crewe both Cheshire

Getting plating to go down holes can be interesting, and when I've used it in my previous life it was usual to finish grind as the thickness is not necessariy uniform
