I have just acquired a useful selection of Corian off-cuts, and am looking forward to making various small components from this wonder-material.

Would those who have worked with it please give some guidance regarding speeds and feeds, cutter angles and such.

      Many thanks

      MichaelG.

Fast cutter speed though I doubt you will get upto 25,000rpm router speeds, flycuts well, similar tools to those you would use on aluminium. Keep the vacuum handy as the "swarf" when milling and flycutting comes of like plastic confetti and the static will have it sticking everywhere.

I posted a few shots in this thread and this was one of my best jobs with the stuff

Can also be thermoformed (heated and bent) like this little box I knocked up

I use it for brush caps now on DC and universal motors.

Used to use tufnol but it doesn't thread well, Corian does, and also found I can knurl it using a straight cut knurl as opposed to crush knurl [ that definitely doesn't work.

My nephew has a kitchen and bathroom business and he buys it in as 12mm sheets which seems the most popular.

If they need thicker there is a special glue for it so he glues me two 12mm wide strips so I get a 24mm square stick and that does most of what i need.

                  The knurling looks very clean.

I do a lot of pen turning with polyester, acrylics and corian. I have found that a standard carbide insert works well, about 900 rpm with slow feed at 0.25mm doc gives an easily polished finish. Be prepared for the material to flex MUCH more than metal when turning. It's all too easy to get a doric column shape when trying to turn a cylinder – when pen turning I try to use the largest steel mandrel I can get inside the pen. The stuff flexes at least 10x further than metals would at the same diameter.

Polish with micromesh, preferably wet with cutting fluid. If you use a slow feed for the final cut, should be able to start polishing with 1800 grade (else start with 1200 grade), and work your way up to 12000 grade for a high gloss polish.

                    Regards,

                    Richard.

John , I will be going on the Saturday if that's any good?

We could do a trade off. I have Ali and stainless in abundance?

Corian makes good draining boards, i have made 2. My wife worked in a firm who sold and processed Corian making kitchen tops and other items for fitting out Hotel and other facilities. I worked with a fine blade saw on the saw bench and a Router with no problems apart from dust. It is a bit brittle and does not like being banged about.

My main interest is in making much smaller things than draining boards … but it's all useful info.
