Hi ady I posted a picture a few days back got no reply

so I thought I would try again this time just asking

for Chipmaster owners in the photo I posted it

showed 2 holes 1 in headstock & 1 just behind chuck

These were in the machine when I bought it a

couple of month back I was wondering if they had a specific use

or if someone had tried to add something they both

have grub screws in just wondering if any other

chipmastes have these holes in as this is the 1st

            time I’ve bought a Chipmaster

            thanks for replying

            regards

            steve

Lathes are full of random tapped holes, have you checked out your cross slide I bet it also has a good few holes drilled and tapped and plugged with grub screws.

Have a look here for manuals and brochures. It might not answer yuor question but it'll give you a lot of good info about the chippy.

I have looked at the headstock drawing and it shows the hole in the headstock fitted with two grub screws for retaining the headstock oil channel. The other hole seems to show an oil nipple fitted, presumably for lubrication.

                      Steve,

                      it does not show fitting.

My guess is that the first grub screw is used to tighten on to the oil gallery, this looks like a tube with a number of cut outs. And when this tube is locked the second grub screw is run down to the first grub screw to lock it in position, just as you would use a lock nut.

You are right about it being the "other hole" because the one to which you refer is in an-other part altogether.

The oil nipple is in the clutch housing. The grub screw to which the OP refers is in the front spindle bearing cover.

In a later manual (from SER 3311, diagrams CHIP-01-70 and CHIP-02-70) the longer grub screw goes into the headstock casting first. The shorter one on top of it is presumably to act as a lock bolt so the one below does not back out due to vibration.

The front bearing cover in the manual shows no grubscrew, but the item 1146, labelled 'peg' looks too coincidently to be in the same general location as the grubscrew for them not to be related.

In every Chipmaster I have seen, in both locations, the factory paint has been applied over the grubscrews.
