Just put new drive belts on my ML10 and a general service. I am totally stuck on an "how to deal with it" problem. There is a lubrication nipple on the mandrel triple pulley. It is situated on the boss of triple pulley and on the largest pulley wheel side.

Now the instructions say "oil this nipple", so I get out my non leaking oil gun and there is no chance that it will go on the nipple, the nose diameter of the gun way too big . Now the nipple is a straight one, maybe I can replace it with an angled version. I have tried everything to unscrew this nipple and it won't budge, because all the tools are too large to get at the hex section of the nipple.

I have tried mini spanners both normal and ringed, slim small sockets, nut spinners, tubular spanners and pliers. Nothing will get near to the hex portion of the nipple. I don't even know what the size is between flats, as I cant get a caliper in to measure it.

I have spent the best part of 3 hours trying to remove the nipple and it has me beaten. I cannot be the first person to have the problem of oiling this nipple. so how do others manage this feat?

I suspect the answer lies in having an oil gun that can reach the nipple. It must have a small diameter business end. So does anyone know how to do this simple job, without removing the lathe mandrel and dismantling it, to get at the pesky nipple!

      Andrew.

            Hello Michael,

Thanks for the link. I had decided to turn up a slim tool to remove the nipple, but wasn't sure what the between flats dimension was on the hex of the nipple. Your reply stopped me dead in my tracks, as the alternative of a slim extension for the oil gun was much more appealing, even some dimensions supplied too. I will switch material in the chuck and get on with making it!

            Thank you again,

            Andrew.

I replaced the offending nipple with a cap screw. To oil I just take it out with an allen key and jam the oil can nozzle in the hole. Seems to work okay.

Looks like you could cut away part of the pulley to allow the larger nozzle to work.

                  John,

Might have to go that route, if only I could get the damn nipple out. I ground to a halt on making a slim adapter for the oil gun. Would you believe the thread on the end of the gun is 0,520" O/D with a 25tpi pitch, a 1mm pitch is not such a good match as 25, but maybe just my eyesight.

Goodness knows what thread it is, but non standard for sure. Don't fancy the hassle of cutting an internal thread that size.

So back to making a slim tool to remove the nipple. seem to have wasted at least half a day and some brass and got no further forward. Just one of those days.

                  Andrew,

My S7 has a notch cut out of the pulley to make it easier to lubricate.

Hi Andrew. If it is the same as the S7. I have the oil gun with a very narrow nose that manages to get to the nipple. Although on the S7 the pulley as said above is releaved in that area to get the gun in. Same with the back gear lever , it has a hard to reach nipple in the centre of it.

                          Steve.
