I need 3 or 4 lengths of 1" EN1A round bar, each about 40mm long.

Due to a strain injury, I'm temporary unable to hacksaw steel of that thickness.

Does anyone know of a supplier who will cut to length?

I used to have a mate with a power saw but I've recently moved away.

        Cheers

        Steve

depending on your injury had you thought of using a cutting disc in an 115mm angle grinder ? If you have one, they make a hacksaw look very old fashioned. Noel

Even a jig saw with a metal cutting blade could be used all be it a bit slow

Part off with the lathe – or is the spindle bore too small?

Your location is likely rather remote (as in ‘not local&rsquo to most on here. If it was a little more precise, someone local may have been able to cut them for you.

Even a ‘saws-all’ type machine would do it, I expect?

Got a mill? No real problem, if you have.

                Thanks for the suggestions.

I have neither angle grinder or jigsaw and my lathe and mill are Sherline benchtop machines with a 10mm bore.

As I don't usually need to cut stuff of this size, I've not even got a suitable vice!

My workshop is geared to the horological side of things but I want to make some ER collet chucks.

I moved to Margate from London a few months back and have spent most of the time getting my workshop ready.

Local model engineering societies are a suggestion as would horological groups as well?

                  Faversham looks promising?

M-Machine will cut to any specified length. Email them with details of what you need and ask for a price including delivery. If price is OK then you can phone back with card details or do as I do and just transfer the money to their bank account.

My local emporium cuts to size, and so do the first two internet suppliers I looked at after searching for 'buy metal cut to size'.

Unwillingness to cut may be a local thing – just after buying a mini-lathe, a place in Bristol refused to sell me anything in less than stock lengths, 10 or 12 feet.

I've noticed some trade-outlets are reluctant to sell bits and bobs to hobbyists, probably because of the admin overhead and fuss-factor. I find spending a hefty lump of money in one well organised go makes me a valued customer. The same dosh spread over several small purchases is less welcome, and they definitely don't like giving advice when they're busy!

Internet metal sellers seem more geared to retail customers, and I suppose smaller parcels of metal make delivery easy too.

                        Not necessarily cheap though!

                        sad

Unless you live in the middle of nowhere there will be a number of teenagers nearby. Not all are idiots running around on unsilenced bikes. Enquire through their parents how they earn their pocket money.

You can use the steady to hold the end of the bar, assuming it fits in the length of the lathe. Part off to about 4 or 5 mm, then use a saw for the last part. Pull the extra length away, and face the parted off end thats in the chuck.

You can also part off from the steady rest end as well, but I make a plastic disc to stop the chips getting into the area of the steady.

Some teenagers still use a hacksaw to cut off chains from bikesdevil

Don't forget to add the machining-allowance, especially if asking someone else to cut it for you.

A smallish hobby-grade horizontal bandsaw is the best addition I made to my workshop since getting a lathe and a welder. Well worth the investment if you do that sort of work regularly. Mabye not so much for horology though!

They also sell some small portable bandsaws designed for onsite construction work etc that could be handy in the home workshop too.

Around here they prefer boltcutters or cordless anglegrinders, all very Hi-Tech! [Both made in China, of course ]devil
