Cutting Thin Ply With Piercing Saw

I want to cut a couple of irregular holes around 2 inch diameter in 3mm ply.

I really don't want to buy any tools for this. I have a selection of piercing saws and I don't mind splashing out on some blades that could do the job.

Has any one any suggestions for something suitable?

It depends on the ply as some will splinter very easy. A coping saw or fret saw with a very fine blade will help reduce splintering as will applying tape to both sides.

If it is a better quality ply then that is not likely to happen as much. I use a powered scroll saw and use tape to prevent the grain on the laminations from splintering and as an added bonus it can also aid when cutting as some act like a lubricant for smoother cutting

You can use a fret saw blade in a piercing saw, but the small throat depth will be a restriction compared with using a fret saw. The advantage of a coping saw is that you can turn the blade to go around corners.
The question you need to answer is will your piercing saw frame allow you to reach all of the "cut"?
An alternative would be spiral blades, never used them, but they will cut in all directions.
